Guiding-mechanism; drying. - In a papermaking machine, means for loosening the paper web end from a surface with which it is in contact and for defecting it and directing it through the machine automatically, comprise air blast pipes 28, 29 by which the web is directed to the upper driers 18 as indicated in Fig. 3. Each pipe has a valve by which the jets can be adjusted to obtain balanced opposing currents, and the whole air supply is put into action when starting the machine or after breakage of the web by means of a valve in the main air pipe, by which the pipes 28, 29 are supplied. The arrangement shown may be applied to machines in which the upper driers are staggered in relation to the lower driers. Fig. 6 shows an arrangement in which the pipe 28 is replaced by a rotary brush 45<1> co-operating with a nozzle 46. Doctors 23 direct the web end to the bottom driers 13, and doctors 24 attached to suction pipes 25 clean the driers.
