'I'his invention relates to cylinder 'type papermaking machines and has for an important object thereof the improvement of the present method of forming a sheet so that the speed of formation may be increased and waste resulting from imperfect products reduced.
In the cylinder type paper-making machine the forming or wet end of the machine consists of one or more vats eachl containing a cylinder mold against which operates a couch roll and having associated therewith a felt passing between the cylinder mold and the couch roll.
In operation, the vat or vats receive a constantV supply of paper-making bres in extremely dilute form, the percentage of fibre present in the water often being as low as .25%. As the cylinder molds revolve the water in the vats passes through the wire mesh of the molds and the paper fibres cling to the surface of the mold until brought into Contact with the felt to which they cling. At this time the fibres are in the form of a very wet web of paper and from the cylinder molds the web is carried through the press? drying, and nishing sections ofthe machine.
It has been found that upon an increase in the speed of a machine of this character a greater percentage of water is carried along with the felt and the paper web with the result that this water forms in drops or globules on the under side of the sheet disarranging the fibres and causing the sheet to crus at the couches or at the press rolls.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of a structure rendering it possible to deliver the web of paper as it passes from cylinder mold to cylinder mold with a lower water content than is possible with the standard apparatus and to operate the machine at a greater speed than is now possible while reducing the liability to crush at the couches or presses and provid` chines without the use of primary presses while at the same time producing paper of a better quality at least the same speed at which the machine ordinary operates.
These and other objects we attain by the construction shown in the accompanying drawings 5 wherein, for the purpose of illustration, we have shown a preferred embodiment of our invention and wherein:
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a cylinder machine constructed in accordance with our invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of a slightly modified form of the cylinder machine;
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view through a type of suction roll suitable for use as a drum roll or auxiliary couch roll;

Referring now more particularly to the drawings, the numeral I II generally designates vats vwhich may be of any usual or ordinary construction, II cylinder molds operating in the vats and 30 driven in the usual manner, I2 couch rolls coacting with the cylinder molds, and I3 the felt web passing between the couch and cylinder rolls and about a drum roll disposed at the discharge of the wet end of the machine. In accordance with our invention. we provide an extractor roll I5 having pressure engagement with a cooperating press roll P which may comprise the drum roll hereinbefore referred to. This extractor roll is constructed similarly to the construction of a cylinder mold but is more heavily constructed, the surface thereof comprising a curved and heavily reinforced perforated wire cloth through which'water may readily pass. This extractor roll may operate in a vat I1 45 which may or may not contain water in which the roll operates. A shower pipe I8 is arranged at the rear of the roll to direct water against the roll aftery the engagement of the roll with the web so that any fibres which may cling to the extractor roll will be washed thered from. At the opposite side an air pipe I9 is disposed for directing air against the cover .I6 o! the roll to blow from\the openings thereof any water which may tend to cling therein before the the web.` One of the press roll P and extractor roll i5 is equipped with counter-weighted lever mechanism generally designated at 20 so that a desired and relatively heavy pressure engagement between the rolls may be maintained.' This arrangement of the extractor roll in combination with the press roll may be used with cylinder machines having one or more vats. y
Where the machine contains more than one vat, auxiliary couch or press rolls 2l can be dis-'- posed between the vats and have associated therewith further extractor rolls IS-a similar to the extractor roll just described and equipped with spray and air pipes lB-a and I9-a as shown in Figs. 2 and 6. The use of auxiliary couch rolls and associated extractor rolls in this manner is preferably resorted to where it is desired that the speed of operation of the machine be increased as under these circumstances more water is carried over on the under side of the sheet and the intermediate extractor rolls serve to eliminate this` extra water. The pressure contact mechanism between the auxiliary couch rolls 2i and auxiliary extractor rolls l5-a similar to that employed in the roll P and its associated extractor may be provided as generally designated at 2la. In Fig. 2 we have illustrated a modification of the structure wherein top press roll of the extrac- `tor is a suction roll 22 (Fig. 3). 'Ihe suction roll l will, of course, augment the action of the extractor and pressure rolls to increase the extraction of water from the sheet. Any well known type of suction roll may be employed for this' purpose. Such suction rolls, as is well known to those familiar with the art, comprise an outer rotating perforated shell 23 having an interiorly disposed suction box 2l for producing suction through the shell at a desired point. rolls hereinbefore referred to may likewise be constructed as suction rolls.
In Figs. 5 to 8 inclusive, we have'lllustrated extensions of the above arrangement to eliminate the use of top felts and primary presses in multicylinder paper machines. In Fig. 5 the felt. i3 instead of being returned over the machine and joined with a second or upper felt is passed dlrectly over a 'plurality of extractor presses each including the extractor roll I5 and the co-operating press roll P", and passedidirectly through the first press of what constitutesthe normal press eiid of the machine minus the usual primary presses; .in other words; this felt is passed directly to the first main press ofthe machine and returned over the top roll of this press to the cylinder molds. It has been found -that by the use of a plurality of these extractor presses the sheet is suiiiciently dried to enable its passage through `the main press without crushing so that the extractor presses performD the same function as the primary presses ordinarily employed. Due to the fact that the construction of the xtractor -press permits the sheet to be directly engaged with the extractor roll it is unnecessary that the felt I3 be joined by second felt as when the primary presses are employed. .Since the extractor The auxiliary couch co-operating 'couch rolls i5--a and 2l` disposed between certain of the cylinder molds Ii.
'Ihe arrangement of Fig. 7 is identical with that of Fig. 5 with the exception of the fact that the extractor presses are disposed at the opposite end of the cylinder molds from the first press and the felt with the sheet'thereon is returned over the cylinder molds for engagement with the first press. In an arrangement of this character the felt will, of course, pass about the lower press roll 10 number of extractor presses employed in. the 15 machine. This is accomplished by substituting for the usual first main press a suction press S. P. in which the felt-engaging roll 22-a is a suction roll.
.As will be obvious from the foregoing, the ar- 20 rangement of the machine is capable of a consderable modification in adapting it to uses with various types of cylinder paper machines, and to usel at various speeds, we accordingly do not limit ourselves to the specific structure herein- 25 before se't forth except as hereinafter claimed.

In a cylinder paper machine, the combination with a plurality of cylinder vat'units, each including a vat, a cylinder mold rotating therein and a couch roll, a carrier passing between the couch roll and cylinder mold of each unit for transferring the paper web from the cylinder molds and a drum roll about which the carrier passes, of a screen-faced extractor roll co-acting with therdrum roll and having pressure engagement therewith through said carrier and web while directly contacting the web, auxiliary couch rolls disposed between adjacent vats and screenfaced extractor rolls coacting with said auxiliary couch rolls while directly contacting the web.' said auxiliary couch rolls comprising perforated shells having interiorly disposed suction boxes.
6. In a cylinder paper machine, the combination with a plurality of cylinder vat units, each including a vat, a cylinder mold rotating therein and a couch roll, a carrier passing between the couch roll and cylinder mold of each unit for transferring the paper web from the cylinder molds and a drum roll about which the carrier passes, of' a screen-faced extractor roll co-acting with the drum roll and having pressure engagement therewith through said carrier and web while directly contacting the web, auxiliary couch rolls disposed between adjacent vats and screen faced extractor rolls co-acting with said auxiliary couch rolls while directly contacting the web, said drum roll and auxiliary couch rolls comprising perforated shells having interiorly disposed suction boxes.
7. In a cylinder paper machine, the combination with a plurality of cylinder vat units, each including a vat, a cylinder mold rotating therein and a couch roll, a carrier passing between the couch roll and cylinder mold of each unit for transferring the paper web from the cylinder molds and a drum roll about which the carrier passes, of a screen-faced extractor roll co-acting with the drum roll and having pressure engagement therewith through said carrierand web while directly contacting the web, auxiliary couch rolls disposed between adjacent vats, screen-faced extractor rolls co-acting with said auxiliary couch rolls while directly contacting the web and means associated with each extractor roll for drying the roll before its contact with the web.
8. In a cylinder paper machine, the combination with a cylinder vat unit including a vat, a cylinder mold rotating therein, a couch roll coacting with the cylinder mold, a carrier passing between the couch roll and cylinder mold for transferring the paper web from the cylinder mold, and a pair of pressure-engaged rolls between which the carrier with the attached web has unaccompanied passage, without y removal of the web from the carrier, acting to extract water from the` felt and web immediately after their passage from the cylinder mold, the lower most of said' rolls being screen-faced and engaging the web while at the under surface of the carrier.
9. 'Ihe method of forming a pulp sheet consisting in collecting a saturatedA pulp web upon a felt, subjecting the felt and web to pressure with the web ,in contact with an underlying screen surface to dry the web to an extent preventing crushing by press pressures and then pressing the same.

Apparatus for forming a pulp sheet comprising a carrier felt, means for collecting a paper web thereon, a press through which the carrier passes and a plurality of extractor presses arranged between said web-forming means and the first-named press and through which the carrier with the web thereon passes, each of said extractor presses comprising a roll underlying the web and having a screen face, the web being in `contact with said screen face.

In a cylinder paper machine, the combination with'cylinder molds and a felt to receive a paper web from the cylinder molds, a plurality of extractor presses between the rolls of which the felt directly passes after leaving the cylinder molds, said rextractor presses each comprising a screen-faced roll underlying the web and with which the web directly engages and a main press to which the felt and web carried thereby directly pass upon leaving the extractor presses.

In a cylinder paper machine, the combination with cylinder molds and a felt to receive a paper web from the cylinder molds, a plurality of extractor presses between the rolls of which the felt directly passes after leaving the cylinder molds, said extractor presses each comprising a screen-faced roll underb'ing the web and with which the web directly engages and a main press to which the felt and web carried thereby directhr pass upon leaving the extractor presses, the felt-engaging roll'oi said main press comprising a suction roll.

The method of operating a cylinder paper machine including the usual pick-up felt and main press section comprising compressing the pick-up felt and the web carried thereby immediiately upon passage of the felt from the cylinder molds while maintaining the paper web in contact with an underlying screen surface and then passing the web directly to s aid main press section.
14. The method of operating a cylinder paper machine consisting in collecting a paper web on a felt carrier. subjecting the web to a water-extracting operation, thereby fitting the web for pressing while protecting the affected fibres of the web by associating the web with a directly contacting screen support during such operation and subjecting the web while still on the carrier to the action of a suction roll.

The process of making paper which cornprises forming a brous web on the conventional cylinder mold, picking up said web on a carrier felt on the under side thereof, directly contacting said fibrous web while on the felt with a bare screen surface, extracting water from the) web while in contact with said screen surface, allowing said web to follow the carrier felt in its travel back over the machine, extracting further' quantities of water from said web while still on said carrier felt by means of a suction press roll, removing said web from said -carrier felt and directing said carrier felt back to the cylinder mold.

In the p of removing water from a fibrous web built up on the carrier felt in a cylinder type of paper machine, the step which comprises contacting said web and carrier felt directly against a bare screen surface with the web in direct engagement wtth said screen surface, extracting water from the web while incontact with said screen surface and allowing the web to follow the carrier felt back over the machine. A

Apparatus for making paper, comprising means for collecting pulp lupon a screen surface, a felt engaging said screen surface to remove the pulp therefrom and means acting upon the felt and pulp to extract water therefrom comprising a. supportingscreen surface directly contacting' means for collecting pulp upon a screen surface, a felt engaging said screen surface to removethe pulp therefrom and means acting upon the felt and pulp to extract water therefrom comprising a supporting screen surface directly contrasting the pulp, while the pulp is at the under surface of the carrier felt. I 20. 'Ihe process of making paper which comprises forming a fibrous web on the conventional cylinder mold, picking up said web on a carrier felt on the under side thereof. directly contacting said brous wehwhiie on thefelt. with a bare screen surface. extracting water fromthe web while in contact with said screen surface, extracting further quantities of /water from said web while still on said carrier felt-by means of a suction press roll, removing said web from said carrier feit and directing said carrier felt back to the cylinder mold.

In a cylinder paper nachine, the combination of a vat unit having a cylinder mold therein and a co-acting couch roll, a pick-up felt passing between the cylinder mold and couch roll for collecting a paperweb on the under surface thereof, a drum roll spaced approximately horizontally from the vat unit, said pick-up felt extending approximately horizontally from the vat unit to said drum rollwith the paper web on the under side thereof, and a screen faced extractor roll actingwiththedrumrollanddirectly-z1z the web on the under surface of thev pick-up felt.
22. Apparatus as claimed in claim 17 wherein themeansactinguponthefeltandpulp further includes a suction roll.
23. Apparatus as claimed in claim 1'1 wherein themeansactinguponthe feltandpulpfurther includes a suction roll acting through the felt.4
24. Apparatus as claimed inl claim 18 wherein the means acting upon the felt and pulp further includes a suction roll.
