Abstract
1,227,876. Oxygen lances. MACROSONICS CORP. 27 May, 1968, No. 25332/68. Heading F4B. A water-cooled oxygen lance 124 used in the refining of iron or steel in an open hearth furnace, rotary furnace or a converter, is associated with a resonator 132, to produce sonic or supersonic acoustic waves which during the refining process help to reduce splashing of molten metal and slag. The convergent or Laval copper nozzle of the lance is equipped with a sound reflector 130 and has the resonator 132, with its perforated bottom 135, secured to it by three legs 134. Multi-jet lances (Fig. 5, not shown), each jet being equipped with a resonator, may alternatively be used. Various modified forms of lance nozzle-resonator systems (Figs. la to lm, 7 and 8, not shown) are also disclosed.
