Abstract
The Ni content is increased and C content reduced by spraying a falling molten stream of ferro-nickel which pref. includes fine grain slagging agent and fluxes, with an O2 contg. gas, pref. pure O2, to form an is approx. horizontal spray cone. The metal and slag collecting at the bottom of the enclosure are pref. continuously evacuated, and the quantity of O2 relative to the initial wt. of ferro-nickel and supplied as a unit of time is greater the quantity stoichiometrically necessary to reduce the C content to is approx. 0.01% and to scorify >=30% of the Fe and other oxidisable elements e.g., Cr, Si and P which may be present.
