Abstract

1,217,494. Fluid-pressure servomotor systems. R. C. PEARSON. Feb.15, 1968 [Feb. 21, 1967], No.8204/67. Heading G3P. [Also in Division B8] The cable 6 of a crane mounted on a marine drilling rig is provided with a manually controlled telescopic link to compensate for movements of a supply vessel when articles are being transferred to and from the latter. The link comprises a piston 9 connected by rod 7 to the cable, and a cylinder 8 connected by a chain to the hook 5. A valve spool 24 carried by a housing 10 fixed to cylinder 8 is biased by spring 33 to a position connecting port 29 to exhaust line 19, thereby allowing supply pressure admitted to chamber 17 from line 11 to fully retract the link. The spool is manually controlled from the vessel via lever 31 or a chain, and the cylinder 8 automatically follows movements of the lever whether those are intentional to reposition the hook or involuntary due to rise and fall of the vessel. Pressure fluid is supplied from the platform or vessel or from a pump on the ram, in which latter case the pump motor is powered through flexible cables.
