Abstract
1,250,405. Spray carburetters. AUDI NSU AUTO UNION A. G. Oct. 22, 1969 [Oct. 22, 1968], No. 51656/69. Heading F1B. A carburation system comprises an induction pipe of substantial length with a main carburetter at the upstream end of the pipe, the downstream end of the pipe being adapted for connection to an induction chamber of the engine, a throttle valve in the induction pipe, and an idling system in which fuel is mixed with air and passes through a mixture passage which is short in comparison with the length of the induction pipe and opens into the induction chamber at the downstream end of the induction pipe. A planetary piston engine 1 has two main inlet passages 4, both fed with mixture by a main carburetter having a float chamber 17 and separated from the engine by a long induction pipe 2. A separate throttle valve 5 is provided in each inlet passage 4. To avoid precipitation of droplets of fuel in the induction pipe 2 during idling, the idling system is separated from the main carburetter and is located near the induction chamber, e. g., in the cylinder block or cylinder head but preferably in a flange 3 containing the inlet passages 4. The idling system comprises a fuel pipe 10 communicating with the float chamber 17 or a separate float chamber and terminating in an idling fuel jet 11 at a chamber 9 in which the fuel is mixed with air supplied from one of the inlet passages 4 upstream of the associated throttle valve 5 via an air passage 8 calibrated at 8a to serve as an idling jet. From the chamber 9, separate idling mixture passages 13 each containing an idling mixture regulating screw 14 and leading to an idling inlet passage 6 associated with the respective main inlet passage 4. Extra air is supplied to each passage 6 from its associated main passage 4 via a passage 15 commencing upstream of the associated throttle valve 5 and containing an air regulating screw 16. Blow-back of fuel on occurrence of pulsation in the idling inlet passages 6 is prevented by a common non-return valve 12 or by separate non-return valves in the passages 13.
