Abstract

1,244,324. Counter balance sliding windows. SEASON-ALL INDUSTRIES Inc. 8 Aug., 1968 [11 Aug., 1967], No. 55324/70. Divided out of 1,244,322. Heading E1J. In a sliding sash window, shown as a double hung sash described in Specification 1,244,322, the upper sash is provided with a counter balance at each stile and the lower sash 6 according to the invention has a counter balance only at the jamb 2 there being provision in the frame adjacent the other jamb 3 to accommodate a second counterbalancing if desired. The features of the frame to this end as by the provision of flanges 18 away from the web of the sash guide channels (102) are the subject of Specification 1,244,323. As shown in Fig. 3 lower sash 6 has only one counter balance and has a sash guide slide e.g. of nylon, 14 on the stile 10 to engage and ride on the inturned flange (17) of the sash guide channel. The counter balance member 17 is provided with an elongate housing 114 housing the spring 116 and has a supporting slide 124, 125 secured on each end thereof to ride in its channel 2 in the jamb 7 and interengaging with the sash guide slides 14, the slide 124 being secured to the housing 114 at 126 and having a toe portion 127 with inclined surface 128, and a shoe 129 which engages the web 101 of the jamb sash guide channel 102 and a resilient abutment 130 extends from the slide 124 toward the slide 14. The slide 125 is secured to the housing 114 at 134 and has a toe portion 135 and a shoe 137 engaging the web 101. As the sash 6 is brought down surface 136 of the shoe 125 rides up the centred surface 142 of stile channel 138 and the inclined surface 128 of the slide 124 rides up the inclined surface 132 of sash guide 14 until the resilient abutment 130 rides over abutment 133 of the sash guide 14 and the counterbalance 17 takes up the position shown taking up the space provided in the sash guide channel 102. Shoes 129 and 137 engage the panel or web 101 of the jambs for sliding thereon. Counterbalance 17 remains interlocked with the sash guide 14 and thus counterbalances the sash through the tension spring assembly 115 to permit the sash to be placed in any selected position along the jamb. The counterbalance 17 is unlocked from the sash guide 14 by means 143 as described in Specification 1,244,325 to enable the sash to be withdrawn from the jambs.
