Abstract

1,179,031. Heat generating pipes. CHISSO CORP. 3 April, 1967 [5 April, 1966], No. 15134/67. Heading H5H. A heat-generating pipe arrangement comprises at least one ferromagnetic pipe 1 connected at one end to an A.C. source 7 by a line 8, an insulated line 3 passing inside the entire length of the pipe and connected between the source and the other end of the pipe, the space between line 3 and the pipe wall being filled with a material having a higher thermal conductivity than that of air, the pipe wall thickness being greater than twice the penetration depth of the current flowing in the pipe so that the current flows through the inner surface only by the skin effect and generates heat without any current flow on the outer surface of the pipe. The filling material is a liquid such as water, salt solutions, fats, oils, glycols, alcohol or glycol solution, paraffin, acetic acid, naphthalene, caustic soda. For heating a transportation pipe installed in sea water, &c., the water flows into the pipe through slits therein, or there are a series of pipes. The pipe alternatively may be welded to a liquid transportation pipe, or used to heat roads, runways &c. Conductor line 3 comprises Cu or Al insulated with rubber, PVC, polyisobutylene or PTFE.
