Abstract

1,148,700. Flocking textile materials. SINGER CO. 29 Dec., 1967 [31 Dec., 1966], No. 59101/67. Heading D1L. Textile materials including filaments and yarns are electrostatically flocked by conducting an adhesive coated material through an atmosphere of flock generated by an electrostatic field acting on a source of flock material, the electrostatic field being generated by a main electrode and an activating electrode of the same polarity but higher potential and a complementary electrode of opposite polarity, the adhesive coated material being passed between the complementary electrode and the main and activating electrodes in the direction from the activating electrode to the main electrode. A flock material is fed from a hopper 20 via rotary distributing devices 21, 17 onto an earthed sieve floor 19 through which the flock passes onto a moving endless conveyor 8 whence it is conveyed into the flocking apparatus. The belt 8 passes between an upper vibratory complementary electrode 5 having a positive potential and lower activating electrode 2 and main electrode 3 both of negative potential, but that of electrode 2 being greater than that of electrode 3. Electrode 3 is situated downstream of electrode 2 and is separated therefrom by a gap A sufficient to prevent flasbover. Simultaneously a plurality of parallel filaments or yarns are fed through a device 26 in which they are coated with adhesive and thence through the flocking apparatus passing above the belt 8 but below upper electrode 5. A cover plate 4 is placed over the flocking apparatus to enclose the flocking chamber. To ensure an even distribution of the flocking material the base of the sieve 19 is divided into three trapezoidal sections the outer two of which have a larger mesh size so that the peripheral areas of the belt are not deficient in the material when the belt enters the flocking apparatus. In a preferred embodiment the activating electrode was given a potential of between -33 and -60 KV, the main electrode a potential of between -30 and -40 KV and the complementary electrode potential of between +40 and +45 KV.
