Abstract

A mixt. contg. by wt. 40-50% SiO2, 4-8% Al2O3, 20-30% CaO, 4-8% Na2O, and 15-30% iron oxide, is vitrified to obtain a prod. (I) used to capture solar energy and for the storage of heat. (I) is pref. obtd. by moulding, extrusion, rolling or granulation, starting from mining or metallurgical-scrap obtd. e.g. from iron- or lean-ores, zinc or Pb dross, or red mud obtd. from bauxite or titania. (I) may be rolled into thin sheet used to capture solar energy by the greenhouse effect; or the prod. (I) may be milled to 40-70 um and sprayed in a H2 or N2 plasma onto a sheet metal substrate to form a layer (1) absorbing solar energy. The emission of the thin sheet (I) or layer (I) is pref. reduced by a thin continuous film of the oxide(s) of Cr and/or Cu and/or Mn applied by spraying in a plasma of H2 or steam. Low cost prod. can be used to capture and store solar energy, and also to store heat obtd. from power stations using fossil-or nuclear-fuels; or the store geothermal energy.
