Et nett for ATM-signaler innbefatter kildeendesystemer SES1, SESS som er forbundet med en permanent virtuell forbindelse PVC1 gjennom svitsj SW1... SWN. Dynamiske båndbreddekontrollere DBC1, DBC2 opererer som vir- tuell kilde/virtuelle destinasjoner. De enkelte svitsjer, slik som svitsj SW2 er til- knyttet hastighetskontrollere RC1 som bestemmer den tilgjengelige båndbredde for signalveien PVC1. En dynamisk båndbreddekontroller DBC1 avspør hastig- hetskontrolleren RC1, RC2 ved å bruke ressursstyresignaler (RM-signaler) som kan skadekoples fra svitsjenode til svitsjenode langs veien i en foroverretning, og så i en bakoverretning. Den enkelte DBC kommuniserer med de enkelte SES ved bruk av RM-signaler som kan ha et annet format enn de RM-signaler som føres fra svitsjenode til svitsjenode.
