This is pretty awful but in a hilarious way.
Sleazy, silly, stupid. Lots of skin on display no matter your preference. But it's the batshit plot that is the star here, with so many random scenes and situations one after the other. It's clearly comedic on purpose at times but it does have that odd, "are they in on the gag" feel throughout.
A blind buy sometimes just doesn’t work out. The idea for this slasher is cooler in concept than execution. These sniveling whining student athletes want so badly to be Olympic competitors but start getting offed by a killer in pretty boring ways. I like the javelin weapon idea but there’s no real sense of dread or any thought of danger for these characters until they randomly die.
It does have dudes in their briefs and jocks (and fine, naked girlies if that’s your thing) but sometimes I need more ya know
As much as I love Wes I really don’t like the original version of this. The remake, despite coming out in the unofficial era of remaking everything for financial reasons, still hits the same beats but works better as a film. It has more of a balance between the detestable first half and the more satisfying second half, with a more consistent tone from start to finish.

All in all this is quite solid. Probably my least favorite Eggers film and I do wish I liked it more. Of course it’s a stunningly beautiful film in many regards. The atmosphere is incredible. It feels genuinely otherworldly at times. It’s also very good at reminding you of why the original is so memorable after a century without directly replicating it.
