A skilled organizer, Nabeela has been an active voice for her community, especially those who are underserved and underrepresented in government institutions. Most recently, she served as the Campaign Manager for current Township High School District 211 School Board Member Tim Mc Gowan — a campaign that emphasized the values of accountability, community, and equity in our schools.

From knocking on doors to help elect Democrats in Schaumburg and Palatine to organizing Asian American voters to flip Senate seats in Georgia, Nabeela has worked to advance essential causes locally and nationally.

Professionally, Nabeela has worked with a variety of critical organizations, including EMILY’s List, to raise money to elect Democrats to Congress. Currently, Nabeela works for a non-profit in digital strategy supporting various civic engagement efforts to mobilize voters and protect our democracy.

Nabeela graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in Political Science and Business Administration, where she served as the president of a pro-bono consulting organization assisting local businesses and nonprofits.
  • Reproductive Rights: It is important now more than ever to elect pro-choice champions to state legislatures. As states surrounding Illinois have restrictions and outright bans on abortion that will go into effect if Roe v. Wade is overturned, we need to ensure that our state is a beacon for reproductive rights and that we are prepared to provide care for those who need it. I have a track record fighting for reproductive rights. In 2019, when states like Alabama and Georgia passed some of the country’s most restrictive laws on reproductive rights, I worked at EMILY’s List to elect pro-choice champions to Congress. I will always – and unequivocally – protect the right to safe and legal abortion in Illinois.
  • Property Taxes: Property taxes are of huge concern for families in my district, and there are many existing issues that are causing increases in property taxes. Homeowners and small businesses in our communities end up paying more due to systemic under-assessment of large commercial properties, like the Amazon and UPS facilities in the district. I would like to say that this is the first step. The long-term goal is to decrease reliance on property taxes to fund education more equitably from the state level. Another thing we can do is look at the efficiency and need for each layer of government on our property tax bills to make sure that layers of government aren’t providing duplicative services or that maybe one layer of government couldn’
  • Gun Violence: Gun violence is an issue of growing concern for families in the district. People are scared to go to the grocery store and send their children to school. As someone who grew up doing active shooter drills, I know how this fear has become normalized. We need to do more to tackle this issue head-on so we can feel safe in our communities. I will fight for mandatory firearm registration, restrictions on assault weapons, limits on large-capacity magazines, and regulations on bulk firearm purchases.
In addition to these three issues of reproductive rights, property taxes, and gun violence, I am particularly concerned about the state of our democracy. Since the January 6th insurrection, I have been thinking about what we need to do to defend and advance our democracy. That is why I currently work for a nonpartisan voting rights organization that advances legislation to fight against voter suppression and increase access to our democracy. I believe a strong democracy requires strong protections for voting rights. In the area of voting rights, I will advocate for the following:

Access for people with disabilities: Expanding curbside voting and creating a system for people with disabilities to receive and complete electronic ballots using assistive technology

Preregistration for 16-year-olds: Engaging young people early in the voter registration process to increase civic engagement and youth voter participation

Make voting easy: Championing legislation to protect and expand policies that make voting simple, such as online voter registration, Vote by Mail, and Early Voting.

Scorecards

See also: State legislative scorecards and State legislative scorecards in Illinois

A scorecard evaluates a legislator’s voting record. Its purpose is to inform voters about the legislator’s political positions. Because scorecards have varying purposes and methodologies, each report should be considered on its own merits. For example, an advocacy group’s scorecard may assess a legislator’s voting record on one issue while a state newspaper’s scorecard may evaluate the voting record in its entirety.

Ballotpedia is in the process of developing an encyclopedic list of published scorecards. Some states have a limited number of available scorecards or scorecards produced only by select groups. It is Ballotpedia’s goal to incorporate all available scorecards regardless of ideology or number.
