Top 25 Rankings - Week 8

After a ton of top 25 matchups, where do the rankings stand now? So far it has been fun to see some different names in the top half of the rankings. BYU, Indiana, Iowa State, and Pitt are all 6-0. That could become a problem later for the Vols' playoff chances, but I think we can assume (or hope) that most of them will take a couple of losses from here on out.

One of the age-old questions about rankings is...what do they actually rank? Do they reward teams for their resumes? Or do they give credit for how "good" the teams are? Obviously it tends to be a combination of both, but it's still odd to see things like Ohio State at #4 despite a loss and not actually beating a top 25 team, Clemson in the top ten (same story but an even worse loss), and Ole Miss in the top 20 with two losses and no quality wins. I dropped Ohio State out of the top ten and didn't even rank Clemson and Ole Miss. If they beat quality opposition, they'll move up (and likely quickly). But until then, they'll have to wait for other teams to lose.

And just an administrative note just to avoid confusion... I've put record, my prior week ranking for them, and the current AP ranking in parentheses after each team.

1) Oregon (6-0, Last Week #2, AP #2): How good is Oregon? Good enough to beat Ohio State and pick up the best win of the year so far. However, they don't play a ton of other quality opposition, so it may be tough to assess them going forward. They will likely get passed in my rankings as other top teams pick up good wins too.

2) Texas (6-0, LW #1, AP #1): They easily handled Oklahoma but I have to give the edge to Oregon for now. If Texas beats Georgia this week, the Longhorns are going right back up to the top spot.

3) Penn State (6-0, LW #5, AP #3): Penn State could have folded on the road, but they were impressive in coming back for the OT win against USC (who is better than their 3-3 record).

4) BYU (6-0, LW #4, AP #13): Another week, another win as they blew out a mediocre Arizona. If they beat Oklahoma State this week, I think they'll start to get more respect in the polls.

5) Georgia (5-1, LW #6, AP #5): Closer than Dawg fans would have liked against Mississippi State, but it never got closer than ten.

6) Texas A&M (5-1, LW #9, AP #14): Idle. Benefited from Ohio State losing and my now-harsher view of Miami and Indiana after another week to think about it.

7) Iowa State (6-0, LW #10, AP #9): Won at West Virginia. Nothing to write home about, but it's always tough to get it done on the road.

8) Miami (6-0, LW #8, AP #6): Idle. On the road at Louisville this week for what is probably their toughest remaining matchup.

9) LSU (5-1, LW #15, AP #8): Nice OT win over Ole Miss. But there's not time to celebrate because they have trips to Arkansas and Texas A&M coming up, followed by Bama at home.

10) Alabama (5-1, LW #12, AP #7): Barely survived at home against South Carolina. But in retrospect I judged them too harshly last week, so I bumped them up a bit. Wisconsin, Georgia, and South Carolina is still a pretty decent set of wins and Vanderbilt may not end up being such a terrible loss this year.

11) Ohio State (5-1, LW #3, AP #4): How much do you punish a team for losing a close one on the road against a top five opponent? Unfortunately for the Buckeyes, their resume doesn't have much else to stand on right now besides a win over middle-of-the-pack Iowa.

12) Pitt (6-0, LW #11, AP #20): Probably not a top 25 team on talent, but they keep winning.

13) Tennessee (5-1, LW #14, AP #11): The win over Florida was closer than hoped, but a win is a win. BIG opportunity this week against Alabama.

14) Notre Dame (5-1, LW #13, AP #12): Dominated a bad Stanford team. I'm sure they would love to have a do-over on that NIU loss.

15) Indiana (6-0, LW #7, AP #16): They didn't play, but their one "decent" win took a big hit when Maryland lost to Northwestern. Nothing else on the resume at the moment but they still have Nebraska, Washington, Michigan, and Ohio State on the schedule.

16) Kansas State (5-1, LW #19, AP #17): Won on the road against Colorado and Coach Prime.

17) Boise State (5-1, LW #16, AP #15): Dangerous as long as they have Ashton Jeanty running the ball.

18) Washington State (5-1, LW #17, AP #30): Close win on the road against Fresno State. Their schedule is pretty weak from here on out, but if they continue to win I believe they'll show up in the AP rankings soon. As a reminder, they do hold wins over Texas Tech and Washington and their only loss is to Boise State.

19) SMU (5-1, LW #22, AP #21): Idle

20) Texas Tech (5-1, LW unranked, AP #32): Lost early in the season at Washington State, but have since beaten Arizona State, Cincinnati, and Arizona.

21) Arizona State (5-1, LW unranked, AP #28): Just picked up a win over Utah and their only blemish is a loss on the road at Texas Tech. They also beat Mississippi State and Kansas earlier in the season.

22) Missouri (5-1, LW unranked, AP #19): Does beating Vanderbilt now count as a quality win?

23) Illinois (5-1, LW #18, AP #22): Needed overtime at home to beat a not-very-good Purdue team.

24) Navy (5-0, LW #24, AP #25): Idle

25) Army (6-0, LW #25, AP #23): Another week, another blowout win over a bad team.
