Why am I coughing?

YANMD. Why do I get a tickle in my throat causing an immediate need to cough, and I'm nearly choking on the trigger foods? This has only been happening in the last week or so and only with "dry, crumbly foods". Sweet potato chips, French fries, corn dog, bread. If the food is wet, it doesn't happen. So when I had some sourdough bread mixed into a French onion soup, it was fine. [more inside]

Help our cat-loving family find our feline!

Our 8yo has a cat allergy, originally detected by a bunch of sneezing and confirmed by a blood test. Our family REALLY wants a cat. We have found a Siberian cat breeder with 8-month-old kittens available. Siberian cats are known to have lower levels of allergens, but each cat has a different level. You can get each cat tested, but it's expensive and unreliable. We are meeting with the breeder and several of her cats this weekend. How can we maximize our chances of choosing a cat that our kid doesn't react to? [more inside]

Allergic Reaction to Carpet Powder

About two hours ago I decided to use this carpet refresher powder in an attempt to vanquish the smell of my cat's barf. I applied it rather liberally across a section of my carpet but it made everything smell like an acrid combo of lemon and spearmint so I immediately vacuumed it back up. Now I've got a cough and watery eyes. What do I do? [more inside]

Is there a difference between cottonseed oil and cotton?

Does anyone know if cottonseed oil differs from a cotton allergy in general? I am allergic to cotton, as in the fabric and things made of cotton, so does that mean I am also allergic to cottonseed oil? My allergist said I should not be allergic to cottonseed oil but said to try and test it at home if I wanted too on my skin lightly. But Cottonseed oil derives from the cotton plant and so does cotton jeans I imagine (which I cannot wear because I will itch).

My carnivore husband was just diagnosed with Alpha Gal Syndrome. Help.

What the title says. My husband was a head-to-tail butcher and loves beef and pork. This diagnosis is incredibly depressing, in addition to other medical issues. There is not much talk here recently about alpha gal, so just wondering if folk here have insights, hacks, or anything that have come to light since 2019. Thank you in advance. DX was recent, just trying to wrap my head around things.

Accessible travel at NC's Outer Banks

Can you help me find somewhere to stay with my aunt Rosie? We want to go to the NC Outer Banks! Yay! I can't stay at her preferred hotel due to allergies (the Ramada uses air freshener everywhere that's mainly made of propylene glycol). I'd probably be OK at a Hilton. She needs 1) a great ocean view/ocean sounds, 2) no stairs, 3) at least a refrigerator and microwave, and 4) a restaurant in the building. My only additional hard-line requirements are 5) no air freshener, and 6) no mold. [more inside]

False (?) negative allergy skin test - what does it mean?

Can I eat soy-free at a sushi restaurant?

Soy is one of my major migraine triggers, and I haven't eaten at an Asian restaurant in several years because soy is so prevalent in many Asian cuisines/dishes. I've been craving sushi recently, and wondering if I could safely get a chirashi bowl (just fish over rice) at a Japanese restaurant if I am clear that I am allergic to soy. Am I crazy for trying this? Any tips for making sure that the restaurant gets the order right? Would appreciate any advice/experience you could share.

Hello fellow sufferers. So the title is pretty explanatory. My family wanted a puppy so after a lot of research we identified the breed etc. I (the potentially allergic person) even had a skin allergy test done. Neighbor's weed usage is waking me up due to the smell. Help!

My upstairs neighbor has started smoking weed in their bathroom on a regular basis. My fancy air filters don't help and neither does febreeze. What else can I do when I sense the onset? Tonight the smell is so thick I am considering going to my office across town to sleep in peace, so immediately implementable solutions are very welcome.

Our cat sounds sad

Finally done with college apartments, we were able to bring my wife's childhood cat to our home. Her cat has spent the last 8 years in the same house, hiding under the same bed, in her parents bedroom. Her cat had full roam of the house with no closed doors, and every night, my wife's parents would watch TV for 3-5 hours, sitting on the couch, petting the cat with both hands. Now, in the house with closed doors, and less petting, the cat seems to meow sadly at us, at a high frequency. How can we make the cat happy despite this (worse) situation for her? [more inside]

Toddler skin turns red after oatmeal exposure. Allergy?

Yes, YANAD. My daughter had some oatmeal (oats, milk, sugar, cinnamon) and made a mess on her face. Her skin where the oatmeal was stuck for a few minutes turned bright red. After washing it off, the red splotches went away within 15 minutes. No hives, no spreading rash. The oatmeal wasn’t hot so it wasn’t a burn. Should I worry about severe allergic reactions? I will ask her pediatrician but would also love to read up on this. I would especially love evidence-based advice, not just anectdata. [more inside]
