Reusing references: Can we look over your shoulder?

[rievdat wikiteavsttain]

Apologies for writing in English.

The Technical Wishes team at Wikimedia Deutschland is planning to make reusing references easier. For our research, we are looking for wiki contributors willing to show us how they are interacting with references.

  • The format will be a 1-hour video call, where you would share your screen. More information here.
  • Interviews can be conducted in English, German or Dutch.
  • Compensation is available.
  • Sessions will be held in January and February.
  • Sign up here if you are interested.
  • Please note that we probably won’t be able to have sessions with everyone who is interested. Our UX researcher will try to create a good balance of wiki contributors, e.g. in terms of wiki experience, tech experience, editing preferences, gender, disability and more. If you’re a fit, she will reach out to you to schedule an appointment.

We’re looking forward to seeing you, Thereza Mengs (WMDE)

Feminism and Folklore 2024

[rievdat wikiteavsttain]
Hjelp til med å oversette til ditt språk

Dear Wiki Community,

You are humbly invited to organize the Feminism and Folklore 2024 writing competition from February 1, 2023, to March 31, 2023 on your local Wikipedia. This year, Feminism and Folklore will focus on feminism, women's issues, and gender-focused topics for the project, with a Wiki Loves Folklore gender gap focus and a folk culture theme on Wikipedia.

You can help Wikipedia's coverage of folklore from your area by writing or improving articles about things like folk festivals, folk dances, folk music, women and queer folklore figures, folk game athletes, women in mythology, women warriors in folklore, witches and witch hunting, fairy tales, and more. Users can help create new articles, expand or translate from a generated list of suggested articles.

Organisers are requested to work on the following action items to sign up their communities for the project:

  1. Create a page for the contest on the local wiki.
  2. Set up a campaign on CampWiz tool.
  3. Create the local list and mention the timeline and local and international prizes.
  4. Request local admins for site notice.
  5. Link the local page and the CampWiz link on the meta project page.

This year, the Wiki Loves Folklore Tech Team has introduced two new tools to enhance support for the campaign. These tools include the Article List Generator by Topic and CampWiz. The Article List Generator by Topic enables users to identify articles on the English Wikipedia that are not present in their native language Wikipedia. Users can customize their selection criteria, and the tool will present a table showcasing the missing articles along with suggested titles. Additionally, users have the option to download the list in both CSV and wikitable formats. Notably, the CampWiz tool will be employed for the project for the first time, empowering users to effectively host the project with a jury. Both tools are now available for use in the campaign. Click here to access these tools

Learn more about the contest and prizes on our project page. Feel free to contact us on our meta talk page or by email us if you need any assistance.

We look forward to your immense coordination.

Thank you and Best wishes,

Feminism and Folklore 2024 International Team

Enabling machine translation support, Section and Content translation tools in your Wikipedia

[rievdat wikiteavsttain]

Hallo Northern Sami Wikipedians!

Apologies as this message is not in your language, Hjelp til med å oversette til ditt språk.

The WMF Language team plans to enable the Section and Content translation tools to Northern Sami Wikipedia by default. Also, the team is considering adding machine translation (MT) support with MinT to the tools. MinT may be providing limited support for your language, so we want to make sure it is useful for the community. For this, my team would like members of your community to:

  • Test the machine translation support in a test instance. You can paste multiple pieces of content from different Wikipedia articles and check whether the provided result is a useful starting point for a translation.
  • Give us feedback if the machine translation quality is okay to be on your Wikipedia by default, as an optional service or if it is not useful at all.
  • Let us know if you have any objections to having the Section and Content translation enabled by default in this Wikipedia.

Below is background information about the tools and how you can test them.

Background information

Content Translation has been a successful tool for editors to create content in their language. Since its release in 2015, the tool has aided the translation of more than one million articles across all languages. However, the tool is in beta in Northern Sami Wikipedia, limiting its discoverability and use. Being in beta also blocks enabling the Section translation in your Wikipedia.

Section Translation extends the capabilities of Content Translation to support mobile devices. On mobile, the tool will:

  • Guide you to translate one section at a time to expand existing articles or create new ones
  • Make it easy to transfer knowledge across languages anytime from your mobile device

MinT (Machine in Translation) is a machine translation service hosted in the Wikimedia Infrastructure. It is designed to provide translations from many MT models. The model available for your Wikipedia is the MADLAD-400 open-source translation model.

Our request

The MADLAD-400 MT is available for your Wiki in our test instance. We want you to test it (translate sentences and paragraphs from articles) in our test instance:https://translate.wmcloud.org. Let us know in this thread if the quality of the automatic translation generated is okay to enable it in Northern Sami Wikipedia along with the Section and Content translation tool.

Our plans to enable the tools and the machine translation support

We plan to deploy the tools with the MT support by the 4th of March. If there are no objections from your community, we will deploy them. We want to provide the tools in the way they best serve the community, so we are open to make further adjustments after the deployment based on the experience of the community.

We look forward to getting your feedback in this thread. Thank you!

On behalf of the WMF Language team.

UOzurumba (WMF) (ságastallan) guovvamánnu 15 b. 2024 dii. 5.14 (UTC)[vástit]

@UOzurumba (WMF): I have tested it and the madlad-400 model is utter rubbish for Northern Sámi; please do not deploy it. It makes neither grammatically correct sentences nor coherent sentences in Northern Sámi. It also introduced fantasy "translations" of sentences that did not exist in the original. This all makes me wonder what was used to train the model in the first place. By deploying this, the model will also get progressively worse as it is likely it will be retrained using the nonsense it spouts and that people will add to sewiki thinking it is correct Northern Sámi. This already occurs with various online MT services that offer "Northern Sámi" as one of the languages. Moreover, we already have an example with another Sámi language from the incubator where nonsense was added by someone who did not know the language to the point where the actual language community has not touched it in 12 years. I do not want to see the same happen here.
On a separate note, I appreciate that the language team might think that CT/ST and MinT are useful for a wp like Northern Sámi, but I also find it worrisome that these are being rolled out in a wp that has basically no active editors. This means that the burden of cleaning up any resulting mess will take away from the very little amount of activity that exists on here now. To use myself as an example, I no longer have the time to actually expand sewiki; all my time here already goes to negating the effects of vandalism, which has also taken the joy out of editing on sewiki. - Yupik (ságastallan) guovvamánnu 15 b. 2024 dii. 21.48 (UTC)[vástit]
Hello @Yupik, I appreciate your honest feedback that the MT is substandard.
We aim to provide tools, products, and support to improve your work and help you become more efficient. If the MT does not offer that for your Wikipedia. In that case, your Wikipedia will only have the Section and Content translation by default without the machine translation.
Thank you for your work in this Wikipedia and let me know if you have questions.

Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees 2024 Selection

[rievdat wikiteavsttain]
You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki.

Dear all,

This year, the term of 4 (four) Community- and Affiliate-selected Trustees on the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees will come to an end [1]. The Board invites the whole movement to participate in this year’s selection process and vote to fill those seats.

The Elections Committee will oversee this process with support from Foundation staff [2]. The Board Governance Committee created a Board Selection Working Group from Trustees who cannot be candidates in the 2024 community- and affiliate-selected trustee selection process composed of Dariusz Jemielniak, Nataliia Tymkiv, Esra'a Al Shafei, Kathy Collins, and Shani Evenstein Sigalov [3]. The group is tasked with providing Board oversight for the 2024 trustee selection process, and for keeping the Board informed. More details on the roles of the Elections Committee, Board, and staff are here [4].

Here are the key planned dates:

  • May 2024: Call for candidates and call for questions
  • June 2024: Affiliates vote to shortlist 12 candidates (no shortlisting if 15 or less candidates apply) [5]
  • June-August 2024: Campaign period
  • End of August / beginning of September 2024: Two-week community voting period
  • October–November 2024: Background check of selected candidates
  • Board's Meeting in December 2024: New trustees seated

Learn more about the 2024 selection process - including the detailed timeline, the candidacy process, the campaign rules, and the voter eligibility criteria - on this Meta-wiki page, and make your plan.

Election Volunteers

Another way to be involved with the 2024 selection process is to be an Election Volunteer. Election Volunteers are a bridge between the Elections Committee and their respective community. They help ensure their community is represented and mobilize them to vote. Learn more about the program and how to join on this Meta-wiki page.

Best regards,

Dariusz Jemielniak (Governance Committee Chair, Board Selection Working Group)

[3] https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Minutes:2023-08-15#Governance_Committee

[5] Even though the ideal number is 12 candidates for 4 open seats, the shortlisting process will be triggered if there are more than 15 candidates because the 1-3 candidates that are removed might feel ostracized and it would be a lot of work for affiliates to carry out the shortlisting process to only eliminate 1-3 candidates from the candidate list.

You can find this message translated into additional languages on Meta-wiki. Hjelp til med å oversette til ditt språk

Hello everyone,

After carefully tallying both individual and affiliate votes, the Charter Electoral Commission is pleased to announce the final results of the Wikimedia Movement Charter voting.

As communicated by the Charter Electoral Commission, we reached the quorum for both Affiliate and individual votes by the time the vote closed on July 9, 23:59 UTC. We thank all 2,451 individuals and 129 Affiliate representatives who voted in the ratification process. Your votes and comments are invaluable for the future steps in Movement Strategy.

The final results of the Wikimedia Movement Charter ratification voting held between 25 June and 9 July 2024 are as follows:

Individual vote:

Out of 2,451 individuals who voted as of July 9 23:59 (UTC), 2,446 have been accepted as valid votes. Among these, 1,710 voted “yes”; 623 voted “no”; and 113 selected “–” (neutral). Because the neutral votes don’t count towards the total number of votes cast, 73.30% voted to approve the Charter (1710/2333), while 26.70% voted to reject the Charter (623/2333).

Affiliates vote:

Out of 129 Affiliates designated voters who voted as of July 9 23:59 (UTC), 129 votes are confirmed as valid votes. Among these, 93 voted “yes”; 18 voted “no”; and 18 selected “–” (neutral). Because the neutral votes don’t count towards the total number of votes cast, 83.78% voted to approve the Charter (93/111), while 16.22% voted to reject the Charter (18/111).

Board of Trustees of the Wikimedia Foundation:

The Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees voted not to ratify the proposed Charter during their special Board meeting on July 8, 2024. The Chair of the Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees, Nataliia Tymkiv, shared the result of the vote, the resolution, meeting minutes and proposed next steps.

With this, the Wikimedia Movement Charter in its current revision is not ratified.

We thank you for your participation in this important moment in our movement’s governance.

Proposal to enable Google Translate support in your Wikipedia

[rievdat wikiteavsttain]

Hallo Northern Sami Wikipedians!

Apologies, as this message is not in your language, Hjelp til med å oversette til ditt språk.

Google Translate just introduced machine translation support in Northern Sami language. The WMF Language and Product Localisation team proposes introducing machine translation (MT) support to your Wikipedia's Content and Section translation tools once it is available in the external APIs. Since this is a Machine translation support proposed to be introduced in your Wikipedia, we want to ensure it is helpful for your translation work. For this, my team would like members of your community to:

  • Try the machine translation support at https://translate.google.com/. You can paste multiple pieces of content from different Wikipedia articles and check whether the provided result is a valuable starting point for a translation.
  • Provide us with specific feedback on the machine translation quality. Let us know if the translations are accurate, maintain the original meaning, are grammatically correct, and if they are suitable for your Wikipedia.

Our plans to enable the machine translation support

We plan to deploy the MT support once it is available in the external APIs if your community has no objections to having the translation support.

We look forward to your feedback in this thread, as we need to be sure we will be providing a useful support service for your translation work. Thank you!

UOzurumba (WMF) (ságastallan) suoidnemánnu 24 b. 2024 dii. 22.07 (UTC) On behalf of the WMF Language and Product Localisation team.[vástit]

Please do not add this. I've already had to delete articles and additions on other WM projects because of GT's decision to include Northern Sámi. At the current time, the quality is not good, even if it is marginally better than the other MT services that supposedly translate into Northern Saami. For instance one article that was created using Google Translate talked about violence instead of coats of arms. No one here has the time or energy to comb through these and I hope that people who do not know Northern Saami will not come here and create articles like that and that GT will not be added. - Yupik (ságastallan) suoidnemánnu 25 b. 2024 dii. 11.07 (UTC)[vástit]

Coming soon: A new sub-referencing feature – try it!

[rievdat wikiteavsttain]

Hello. For many years, community members have requested an easy way to re-use references with different details. Now, a MediaWiki solution is coming: The new sub-referencing feature will work for wikitext and Visual Editor and will enhance the existing reference system. You can continue to use different ways of referencing, but you will probably encounter sub-references in articles written by other users. More information on the project page.

We want your feedback to make sure this feature works well for you:

Wikimedia Deutschland’s Technical Wishes team is planning to bring this feature to Wikimedia wikis later this year. We will reach out to creators/maintainers of tools and templates related to references beforehand.

Please help us spread the message. --Johannes Richter (WMDE) (talk) 10:36, 19 August 2024 (UTC)

Preliminary results of the 2024 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees elections

[rievdat wikiteavsttain]

Hello all,

Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2024 Wikimedia Foundation Board of Trustees election. Close to 6000 community members from more than 180 wiki projects have voted.

The following four candidates were the most voted:

  1. Christel Steigenberger
  2. Maciej Artur Nadzikiewicz
  3. Victoria Doronina
  4. Lorenzo Losa

While these candidates have been ranked through the vote, they still need to be appointed to the Board of Trustees. They need to pass a successful background check and meet the qualifications outlined in the Bylaws. New trustees will be appointed at the next Board meeting in December 2024.

Learn more about the results on Meta-Wiki.

Best regards,

The Elections Committee and Board Selection Working Group

Hello everyone, I previously wrote on the 27th September to advise that the Wikidata item sitelink will change places in the sidebar menu, moving from the General section into the In Other Projects section. The scheduled rollout date of 04.10.2024 was delayed due to a necessary request for Mobile/MinervaNeue skin. I am happy to inform that the global rollout can now proceed and will occur later today, 22.10.2024 at 15:00 UTC-2. Please let us know if you notice any problems or bugs after this change. There should be no need for null-edits or purging cache for the changes to occur. Kind regards, -Danny Benjafield (WMDE) golggotmánnu 22 b. 2024 dii. 11.29 (UTC)[vástit]
