Description
WATER DRAIN COMPRISING AN ODOR TRAP AND A METHOD OF INSTALLING SAID WATER DRAIN
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a floor drain, and especially to a floor drain comprising a drain bowl attachable to an outside surface of a drainpipe in fluid communication with the drain bowl. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
Plumbing systems and water drains are usually standard equipment in buildings of any kind. Spill water or liquids on floor surfaces located for example in production areas of a butcher, a professional kitchen, an operating theatre, a bathroom etc. needs to be funnelled from respective floor surfaces during production or use of the facilities as well as when cleaning (flushing) the floors after use. As known in prior art, a drain is normally arranged with a grate flush with the rest of the floor surface residing on top of a drain bowl receiving water or liquids from surrounding floors via the grate. The drain bowl or drain head has an outlet in fluid communication with a drainpipe inside the building. Drainpipes inside buildings are in fluid communication with sewage pipes outside the building, for example located underground in a nearby street. In addition, the drain bowl may comprise an odor trap, usually constituted by water, preventing any odor from the sewage pipe and drainpipes to reach the interior space of the room where the drain is located.
The most common design of an odor trap is an S shaped pipe section oriented horizontally. Then water or liquid will rest at the bottom of the S shape being lowest, and stops any odor passing through the bottom curved part holding the water.
However, using the drain rarely may dry out the water in the odor trap, and odor may pass the trap.
When cleaning a floor, flushing debris towards the drain and the grate on top of the drain will stop and collects objects above a size defined by the openings arranged in the grate surface. Objects smaller than the openings in the grate falls through the grate and is collected at the bottom of the drain. Dependent on the design of the drain, accumulated objects may be resting below the water level of an odor trap, or
above the water level of an odor trap. Sn any case, the accumulated objects may block the outlet pipe or drainpipe, or the drain bowl of the drain.
An aspect of floor drains is the ability and/or simplicity of removing collected debris inside the drain bowl of the drain, for example in front or behind a wail submerged into water constituting an odor trap. Further, cleaning or opening up the drainpipe sometimes is necessary by pushing a flexible steel rod through the drainpipe.
Therefore, it is also an advantage if the drain can constitute a rodding point. Another aspect of floor drains is the ability to arrange the grate surface flush with the surrounding floor surface when constructing the surrounding floor. If the floor is neither level, flat or perpendicular to the drainpipe connected to the drain bowl, some of the edges or circumference of the drain bowl may protrude above the floor level, while some others may be below the floor level. This may pose a risk of stumbling by persons walking on the floor, and makes cleaning and drainage of water on surrounding floor surfaces difficult.
A specific problem of arranging a drain bowl flush with the surrounding floor surface is when pouring wet concrete on a floor base. The drain bowl will have a bouncy, which tends to lift the drain bowl upwards while the concrete is curing.
St may also be a problem that concrete may accidentiy fill the drain bowl when pouring concrete on the floor base. US 4,487,219 A is an example of a prior art drain comprising a cup-shaped (bowel- shaped) water seal, comprising a cupped body (1), a superstructure including a trash screen (2), a water seal forming wall (3), constituting the odor trap, and an outlet (4) for a sewer pipe (5) . US 6381775 B1 disclose an adjustable drain apparatus including a drain base received within a floor. A flange is coupled to the drain base. A ring is disposed in a flange cavity and selectively movable therein. A grate is coupled to the ring. At least one retainer is coupled to the flange to retain the ring in the flange cavity.
Preferably, two opposite rings selectively secure the ring in the flange. The flange has two different orientations with respect to the drain base to selectively position the grate at two different elevations with respect to the drain base.

Further, the mentioning of references such as "a" or "an" etc. should not be construed as excluding a plurality. The use of reference signs in the claims with respect to elements indicated in the figures shall also not be construed as limiting the scope of the invention.
Furthermore, individual features mentioned in different claims, may possibly be advantageously combined, and the mentioning of these features in different claims does not exclude that a combination of features is not possible and advantageous.
Figure 1 is a schematic sketch of respective parts of an example of embodiment of the present invention. A drainpipe 11 is in fluid communication with a drain bowl or drain head 12 of a floor drain 10. The open upper part 13 of the drainpipe 11 extends through a bottom surface of the drain bowl 12, and the opposite end 14 of the drainpipe 11 is in fluid communication with a main drainpipe of the building wherein the drainpipe 11 is installed (not illustrated).
An odor cover 15 according to the present invention is connectable onto the open end of the upper part 13 of the drainpipe. The odor cover 15 is covering the open end of the drainpipe inside the drain bowl 12. The arrow illustrated in Figure 1 illustrates how to join the two parts. The open end of the drainpipe is located below
the top edge(s) of the drain bowl 12, but above the bottom surface of the drain bowl 12. In the example in Figure 1 , the odor cover 15 is arranged with a plurality of outwardly protruding guiding pins 16 that will be inserted into the open end of the upper part 13 of the drainpipe when joining the two parts. The guiding pins will guide the odor cover 15 into the correct position on top of the open end of the drainpipe. On a side surface of the respective ones of the plurality of guide pins 16, there is arranged outwardly protruding stoppers 17 that will stop movement downwards of the odor cover 15 when the guiding pins are inserted into the open end of the drainpipe and the odor cover 15 is pushed downwards into position. When pushing the odor cover 15 downwards, the protruding stoppers 17 will end up in contact with the surrounding edge of the open end of the drainpipe, i.e. it is no longer possible to push the odor cover 15 further downwards. The stoppers are arranged at levels below the top surface of the odor cover 15 such that there is left apertures around the circumference of the open end of the drainpipe, in between the guiding pins 15 and the inner surface 18 of the odor cover 15. In the example illustrated in Figure 1 , the guiding pins 16 are respectively protruding with a slope angle. When inserted into the open end of the drainpipe, the slope angle provides a friction between the bottom ends of the guiding pins and the inner wall of the drainpipe. However, the attachment is releasable, i.e. the odor cover 15 can be removed after installation, for example when the open end 13 of the drainpipe 11 is to be serving as a rodding point of the connected pipe system.
Figure 2 illustrates how the arrangement function when assembling the example of embodiment illustrated in Figure 1.
The odor cover 15 comprises a skirt 19 around the circumference of the odor cover 15. When the odor cover is attached correctly, the skirt 19 is inserted into water or liquids assembled at the bottom of the drain bowl of the drain. The bottom edge of the skirt 19 is protruding downward with a length below the open end of the drainpipe in the upper end 13 of the drainpipe. Figure 2 illustrates how the water in the drain bowl constitute an odor trap. The curved arrows on both sides of the drain illustrates the flow direction when surplus water leaves the drain via the drainpipe.
The level of the water 20 is flush with the edges of the upper opening 13 of the drainpipe 11, i.e. the water level in the drain bowl 12 is defined by the height of the open end 13 of the drainpipe 11 above the bottom of the drain bowl 12.
It is also possibly to attach a filter screen 22 onto bottom edges of the skirt 19 as illustrated in figure 2. The filter screen 22 comprises an aperture adapted to let a drainpipe 11 passing through the filter screen 22.
Debris or objects with a higher weight can sink and assemble on the bottom of the drain bowl 12 on all sides around the drainpipe 11. The filter 22 is trapping lighter objects if the filter is installed. An interesting observation is that clean water is assembled in a section or layer located between a level just below the water surface and the heavier objects on the bottom of the drain bowl.
Water may enter the drain bowl 12 from the upper opening of the drain bowl being flush with a surrounding floor surface the drain bowl 12 is mounted. A grate is normally attached over the opening of the drain bowl 12 flush with the floor. Water may also enter the drain bowl via pipes embedded in the floor. An end of such an embedded pipe will then end in an adapted opening in the side of the drain bowl above the water level 20 defined by the drainpipe height inside the drain bowl 12.
The drain bowl 12 is attached to the drainpipe by guiding the opening in the bottom of the drain bowel 12 over the upper end 13 (refer Figure 1 ) of the drainpipe 11 protruding upwards from inside the floor. A sealing ring 21 is arranged around the edges of the opening in the bottom of the drain bowl 12. The sealing ring 21 is providing a watertight sliding fit enabling movement of the drain bowl 12 upwards and/or downwards on the outside surface of the drainpipe 11 , thereby for example positioning the upper opening 13 of the drain bowl 12 to be flush with the
surrounding floor the drain bowl is located. Further details are disclosed below.
Figure 3 illustrates another example of embodiment of the present invention wherein guiding pins 30 are arranged protruding straight downward from the odor cover 15. The guiding pins 30 may be objects that are compressed when they are inserted into the open end of the drainpipe thereby providing a releasable joint between the odor cover 15 and the drainpipe.
Figure 3 illustrate also the height H of an upper surface 12a of the drain bowl 12 that is flush with the surrounding floor. The correct height H of the drain bowel relative to
the floor surface is possible to set because of the watertight sliding fit provided by the sealing ring 21.
Figure 4a illustrates another example of channels providing fluid communication between the water in the drain bowl and the drainpipe. Respective holes 42 arranged around the upper periphery of the open end of the drainpipe serves as the channels. The odor cover 15 can then have a flat roof 40 resting directly on the edge(s) around the open end of the drainpipe. The odor cover 15 is releasable connected to the drainpipe with for example a click on/click off lock 41 located on corresponding locations around the edges of the drainpipe. In this example of embodiment, it is not necessary to have any sort of guiding pins. The water level in the drain is defined by the lowest bottom end of any of the plurality of holes around the periphery of the drainpipe. The holes around the periphery may be drilled with a drill bit when installing the drainpipe according to the present invention.
Figure 4b illustrates how the holes around the periphery of the open end of the drainpipe open can be U shaped stretching from the edges of the open end of the drainpipe downward to a defined level defining the water level of the drain. The U shaped open ends can be cut out or milled, for example with an adapted drill bit when installing the drain according to the present invention.
Figure 5 illustrates another example of embodiment of the present invention. The odor cover 15 as illustrated in the example of embodiment in figure 4a and 4b can be made as an integral design, wherein the odor cover 15 is attached and fixed permanently to a protruding pipe section 11 a with a smaller outer diameter than the inner diameter of the drainpipe 11b. The protruding pipe section 11a of the odor cover 15 can then be inserted into the open end of the drainpipe 11 b. A gliding sleeve coupling 51 can be used providing a sealing between the two joined pipe sections as well as a possibility to move the protruding pipe section 11 b up and down inside the drainpipe 11 b. Then it is possible to adjust the water level inside the bowl defined by the bottom edges of the holes around the open end on the upper part of the protruding pipe section 11 a since the distance between the holes and the bottom of the drain bowl will be adjustable. When the distance between the bottom of the drain bowl and the holes of the protruding pipe section 11 a is maximized, the volume of the water kept inside the
drain bowl is also maximized. If the water dries out due to external heat or less use of the drain, pushing the odor cover 15 downwards inside the drain bowl 12 will then possibly solve the problem of odors no longer being trapped in the odor trap. Figure 5 illustrates the use of a water tight sliding fit or coupling 50 in the bottom surface of the drain bowl where the drainpipe passes the bottom surface. Then the position of the drain bowl 12 itself can be adjusted, for example during construction of a bathroom simplifying the process of leveling the grate on top of the drain bowl to be flush with the surrounding floor.
The example of embodiment illustrated in Figure 5 is a telescopic design enabling adjustable positioning of the drain bowl (12) relative to the drainpipe (11).
Figure 6 illustrates that the protruding pipe section 11 a of the odor cover 15 illustrated in Figure 5 can be bottle shaped. The effect is that the diameter of the odor cover 15 can be made smaller, for example to be equal or smaller than the diameter of the drain pipe 11b. Then the drain bowl 12 can be made smaller.
Figure 7 illustrates an example of a method when installing a drain according to the present invention. When the concrete is poured onto the floor base, concrete may fall inside the drain bowl of the drain. It is therefore known to use an installation cover covering the open end of the drain bowl when installing the drain in a floor.
In an example of embodiment of the present invention illustrated in Figure 7, the drain pipe 11 is extending above the floor level indicated by the surface level of an installation cover 72 covering the open end of the drain bowl 12. The installation cover 72 is arranged with a hole in the middle wherein the drainpipe 11 can pass. The installation cover 72 is kept in place as long as concrete is poured onto the floor and around the drain bowl. On each side of the installation cover there are a at least a pair of upwardly protruding patches 70 being integral with the installation cover 72, and arranged around the edges of the opening in the middle of the installation cover 72. When the drainpipe passes the middle hole, the patches are adjacent to the outer surface of the drain pipe 11. The vertical position H of the drain bowl can then be adjusted by pushing the drain bowl 12 upward or downward on the outside surface of the drainpipe 11 thereby ensuring that a grate on top of the drain bowl will be flush with the surrounding floor. However, as discussed above, the bouncy of
the drain bowl when residing in the wet concrete may move the drain bowl upward during curing. This can be mitigated by applying a fastening strip 71 around the circumference of the drainpipe over the patches 70. Then the drain bowl is fixed to the drainpipe during curing of the concrete, and the defined height H is kept during curing.
When curing of the concrete is finished, the installation cover 72 is removed. The protruding drain pipe 11 will extend above the floor level, and the height must be adjusted so that the upper opening 13 of the drainpipe is located below upper edges of the drain bowl 12 as discussed above. This can be achieved by cutting the drainpipe 11 at a desired level above the bottom of the drain bowl 12. It is known in the art a saw that can be inserted inside a pipe which then cuts the pipe from the inside and outwardly. Figure 8 illustrates an example of a prior art drain bowl being a rectangular box wherein a rectangular grating is located on top of the drain bowl. An outlet open end is arranged inside the drain bowl. According to an aspect of the present invention a pipe section can be connected to the outlet open end being arranged with for example a sleeve connection as known in prior art. Then the commercial available drain can be converted into a drain according to the present invention by installing a odor cover 15 inside the drain bowl attached to the drainpipe as illustrated in the examples of embodiments.
Figure 9 illustrates that an odor cover 15 according to the present invention can be arranged with a pair of indents 90 being sized to receive a pair of fingers of a user. This simplifies the removal or insertion of the odor cover 15 in a drain bowl 12 according to the present invention.
It is further within the scope of the present invention that a drain can be arranged with service pipes providing fluid communication between several water or liquid inlets and a same drain or drainpipe.
Figure 10 illustrates another example of embodiment of the present invention. An upper outer surface of an odor cover 15 is attached via attachment members 15a onto an inner surface of a first grating 15f located on top of the upper opening of the drain bowl 12. The odor cover 15 is attached and arranged such that the odor cover
I 5 is centered around an upper open opening of the drainpipe 11.The skirt 19 of the odor cover 15 extends downwards in a distance around the outer surface of the drainpipe 11 as disclosed in other embodiments above. Attached to the lower end of the skirt 19, there is a second grating 15c running around the whole circumference of drainpipe 11. Since the second grating is attached to the bottom end of the skirt 19, the second grating will be submerged into water accumulated on the bottom of the drain bowl 12 as discussed above. Therefore, the second grating 15c is inside the odor trap constitutes by the odor cover 15.
A more detailed illustration of the second grating 15c is depicted in Figure 11. The surface of the second grating 15c may be arranged with a plurality of holes 15e permitting water to pass the second grating 15c, either when water passes downwards and out of the odor trap (refer for example Figure 2). The second grating will then collect further debris entering the drain bowl 12 together with spill water.
Another aspect of the second grating 15c is that setback of water from the drainpipe
I I may happen. The second grating 15c will then stop debris in the setback water. On the circumference of the second grating 15c, there are arranged two opposite located cutouts 15d. When lowering the first grating 15a in Figure 10 down into the drain bowl 12, the cutouts 15d illustrated in Figure 11 is oriented such that two opposite locking pins 12b on the inner surface of the drain bowl 12 can pass through the respective cutouts 15d. When a correct position of the odor cover 15 is reached, the first grating 15f is resting on the upper circumference of the drain bowl 12.
The first grating 15f can be turned around, for example clockwise, such that the cutouts 15d will be moved away from the respective locking pins 12b. Then the locking pins 12b will be located below the bottom surface of the second grating 15c facing the bottom of the drain bowl 12. Then the odor cover 15 as well as the second grating 15c as well as the first grating 15f etc. will be securely attached to the water drain.
Figure 12 disclose another example of embodiment of the present invention. A service pipe 121 is arranged with an end being oriented perpendicular to a dominant length of the service pipe 121. The perpendicular oriented end of the service pipe
121 is passing through an adapted opening at the top surface of the odor cover 15. The adapted opening centers the end of the service pipe inside the upper opening of the drainpipe 11. The odor cover 15 is hanging over the upper opening of the drainpipe 11 m and the skirt 19 of the odor cover 15 is constituting the odor trap as discussed above in other embodiments of the present invention.
Water inside the drain bowl 12 constituting a functional odor trap is supplied from the service pipe 121 via a hole in the side of the service pipe 121. The hole is located above the upper opening of the drain bowl 12. Water flowing in the service pipe 121 will be divided such that a smaller part of the water will fill up the inside the drain bowl 12 thereby constituting an example of odor trap according to the present invention.
According to an example of embodiment of the present invention, a floor drain (10) may comprise a drain bowl (12), wherein an adapted through hole in the bottom of the drain bowl (12) enables the drain bowl (12) to be guided over an upper end (13) of a drainpipe (11) protruding upwards from inside a floor, wherein a ring shaped sealing (21) around the circumference of the through hole in the bottom of the drain bowl (12) is arranged providing a water tight sliding fit around an outer surface of the drain pipe (11) when the drain pipe (11) is located inside the through hole in the bottom of the drain bowl (12).

Further, the respective protruding guiding pins (16) may be arranged with an outwardly oriented slope angel. Further, the open end (13) of the drainpipe (11 ) may serve as a rodding point when the odor cover (15) is removed from the open end (13) of the drainpipe (11).
Further, the odor cover (15) may be arranged with a filter screen (22) supported by the skirt (19).
Further, the odor cover (15) may be arranged with a fixed pipe section (11a) protruding downward from an inner roof (18) of the odor cover (15) having an adapted diameter enabling insertion of the fixed pipe section (11a) into the open end (13) of the drainpipe (11b).
Further, the fixed pipe section (11a) may be arranged with a plurality of holes (42, 43) around the periphery of the fixed pipe section (11a).
Further, an outer upper surface of the odor cover (15) may be attached to an inside surface of a first floor grating (15f) facing the interior of the floor drain (10).
