- the conventional configuration has a problem that it is difficult to achieve both display quality and low manufacturing cost such as driver reduction.
- the display quality is likely to be deteriorated particularly in the peripheral region of the picture element. This will be described below.
- Display quality in the area surrounding the picture element An example of a decrease in display quality in the peripheral area of the picture element is the occurrence of flicker.
- the parasitic capacitance (Cgd) generated between the pixel electrode and the scanning signal line that drives the pixel is represented by the sum of the parasitic capacitance applied to the pixel electrode ( Cpix) needs to be small.
- the potential of the scanning signal line changes from the potential for turning on the switching element connected to the picture element electrode to the potential for turning it off, depending on the magnitude of Cgd with respect to Cpix and the magnitude of the potential fluctuation of the scanning signal line.
- the potential of the pixel electrode fluctuates.
- the liquid crystal display device is AC driven to prevent deterioration of the liquid crystal material
- the voltage applied to the liquid crystal differs depending on whether the pixel electrode potential is on the positive side or the negative side with respect to the common electrode. Display anomalies such as flicker and luminance abnormality occur. Therefore, it is necessary to correct the fluctuation of the potential by adjusting the potential of the video signal and the common electrode.
- the correction when the correction cannot be performed at each gradation, when the range of the correction value is limited due to voltage limitation, or when the correction can be performed only in a specific step (for example, 50 mV step), the correction is appropriately performed. Difficult to do. Since the margin for display defects is reduced, Cgd is required to be as small as possible.
- the distance between the scanning signal line and the picture element electrode is long, and therefore the Cgd tends to increase.
- the amplitude width of the potential of the scanning signal is compared with the amplitude width of the potential of the pixel electrode, the amplitude width of the scanning signal is large. For this reason, there is a problem of deterioration of display quality due to the occurrence of flicker due to the generation of Cgd.
- the display quality is likely to be deteriorated in the configuration in which the scanning signal line is provided between the adjacent pixel electrodes even during the potential holding period.
- an oblique electric field is generated in a region where the pixel electrode and the scanning signal line face each other, and display unevenness (alignment abnormality) due to the electric field is likely to occur in the region around the pixel.
- This orientation abnormality is also a problem with a horizontally long pixel electrode because the distance between the scanning signal line and the pixel electrode is long.

- the first substrate includes a plurality of scanning signal lines, a plurality of video signal lines intersecting the scanning signal lines, and a plurality of video signal lines electrically connected to the scanning signal lines and the video signal lines.
- the length of the picture element electrode in the direction along the scanning signal line is a liquid crystal display device longer than the length of the picture element electrode in the direction along the video signal line.
- the alignment of liquid crystal molecules is likely to be disturbed, and the display quality is often inferior.
- the scanning signal line is generally formed of a metal material. Therefore, in a plan view, a region where the signal line is formed has a lower light transmittance or is shielded from light than a region where the signal line is not formed.
- the boundary portion of the alignment region and the scanning signal line are overlapped in a plan view. Therefore, when the picture element is viewed in plan, an area with a low display quality can be hidden, and the influence of a decrease in the aperture ratio due to the provision of the scanning signal line can be reduced.

That is, it has a so-called horizontally long picture element electrode configuration, and as described above, this configuration can reduce the number of video signal lines.
- a plurality of alignment regions having different alignment directions of liquid crystal molecules are provided in one picture element. Therefore, the same display can be shown for a plurality of viewing angle directions. Therefore, a liquid crystal display device with excellent viewing angle characteristics can be realized.

That is, in the above configuration, the connection electrode is provided in a layer closer to the pixel electrode than the storage capacitor line, and the overlapping width of the connection electrode and the reference pixel electrode is larger than the storage capacitor line and the reference pixel electrode. It is wider than the overlap width with the pixel electrode.
- connection electrode tends to act as an electric field shielding plate.
- the first substrate is provided with a connection electrode extending from the switching element in order to electrically connect the switching element and the pixel electrode

- the storage capacitor line and the scanning signal line are generally provided in the same layer.
- the contact hole and the scanning signal line do not overlap in plan view. Therefore, it is possible to provide a storage capacitor line for forming a storage capacitor with the connection electrode while suppressing occurrence of a short circuit failure between the scanning signal line and the storage capacitor line in the vicinity of the contact hole.

- center connection portion 68 that is a solid region of the pixel electrode 60 in the boundary center portion R20. This is because it is not necessary to provide the contact hole 58 in the boundary center portion R20.
- the aperture ratio is increased, and the display area can be enlarged. This is because the area of the connection electrode 54 and the storage capacitor line 36 that are light-shielding electrodes provided in the picture element 14 is reduced.
- the scanning signal line 32 is provided in a straight line in the center of the picture element 14 without being bent into a U-shape. This is because the contact hole 58 is not provided in the center of the picture element 14 and it is not necessary to bypass it.
