WASHING MACHINE.
APPLICATION FILED no.1, 1910.

wi/tweo sco 1 HENRY IlATIMER SIMMONS, OF MEXICO, MEXICO.
WASHING-MACHINE.
Application filed December 1, 1910. Serial No. 595,082.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY L. SIMMONS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residinguat Mexico city, Mexico, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare 'the.following to be a full, clear, and exact clothes to remove the dirt.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section through the washing vessel showing the water drawn from its lower part. Fig. 2 is a similar view but shows the pipes changed to draw the water from the upper part of the vessel. Fig. 3 is a side view of a modified form of strainer.
A is a vessel for holding the clothes together with water and cleansing material, such as soap. The water can be heated in the vessel or separate therefrom to any desired temperature.
B is a support for the clothes, such as a grate arranged above the bottom I) of the vessel leaving a space 6 in the bottom of the vessel for water and dirt.-
C is a cover for the vessel, and D is a circulating pipe connected to the cover G. The circulating pipe is provided with a strainer, and this strainer may be a plate E attached to the cover below the end of the ipe, or it may be'a rose E as shown in Fig. 3 at-. tached to the end of the pipe which projects within the vessel.
G is a circulating lower part of the vesse or grate B.
H is a circulatin um of any approved construction provi e wit a suction pipe I). and a delivery pipe 71.. The circulating pipe G is provided with a portion or pipe section 9 of flexible material, such as india rubber, which may be placed in connection with either of the pipes h or 72.. I
.The circulating pipe D is provided with a portion or pipe section d of flexible matei e attached to the below the support rial for c0 e'cting it to the cover C and perover to beg-removed and remitting th placed at will. The circulating pipe D is also rovided with a portion or pipe section (1 o flexible material for connectin it to either of the pipes h or h. All the exible india rubber ipes can be strengthened by helical coils of wire, if desired.
I is a valve at the bottom of the vessel A for letting out the water and dirt.
J is a water gage.
When the pipes are connected as shown in Fig. 1 the water is drawn from the bottom of the vessel and is forced into its top part. After workin some time in this manner, the pipes are c anged to the positions shown in Fig. 2, the water being drawn from the top of the vessel and forced into its lower part. The action can be reversed periodically until the clothes are clean, and the water and dirt can be drawn off from time to time and clean water and additional washing material can be added.
What I claim is:
1. In a washing machine, the combination, with a washing vessel, of a circulatin pump provided with a suction pipe and a elivery pipe, and circulating pipes connected with the upper and lower parts of the said vessel and provided with pipe sections of flexible material adapted to be connected to either said suction or delivery pipes, whereby the direction of the circulation can be chan ed.
2. In a washing machine, the combination, with a washing vessel provided with a cover, of a circulating sump provided with a subtion pipe and a elivery ipe, and circulating pipes connected wit the upper and lower arts of the said vessel and provided with pipe sections of flexible material adapted to be connected to either said suction or delivery pipes, whereby the direction of the circulation can be changed,'the connection of the upper circulating pipe with the said cover consisting of a second pipe section of flexible materlal, thereby ermitting the cover to be removed and rep aced.
3. In a washing machine, the combination,
with a washing vessel provided with a cover and a strainer at its upper part, and having a support for the clothes in its lower part, of a circulating pump provided with a suction pipe and a delivery pipe, a circulatin pipe secured to the said vessel below the said sup ort and provided with a pipe section of flexible material adapted to be connected Specification. vessel a ove t e said strainer an provi e with a pipe section of flexible material HENRY LATlMER SIMMONS adapted to be connected to either the suction Witnesses:
1 or the delivery pipefwhereby the direction G. A. GUERRA,
of the circulation can be changed. GEORGE SMITH.
