ARTHUR R. BARNETT, OF PORTLAND, OREGON, ASSIGNOB, BY DIBEGT AND MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO UNIVERSAL BED AND HDSPITAL SUPPLY COMPANY, A CORPORA- TION OF OREGON.
ADJUSTABLE RECLINING SPRING-FRAME.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR R. BARNETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and State of Oregon, (whose post-office address is 584 Flanders street,) have invented a new and useful Adjustable Reclining Spring- Frame, of which the following is a specification.
This invention embodies an improved adjustable supporting frame, designed particularly for use in connection with beds in hospitals, or the like, and by the operation of which, the mattress, or equivalent support of the bed may be raised or lowered at its ends to conveniently adjust the position of a patient or for the purpose of increasing the comfort of a person lying on the bed.
For a full understanding of the present invention, reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanying; drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation, showing the frame of a bed with the invention mounted thereon, dotted lines indicating the range of adjustment of the opposite ends of the frame; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the adjustable frame alone; Fig. 3 is a fragmentary plan view of connected portions of an end section of the frame and the intermediate section, parts being broken away to show the adjustinggearing; Fig. 4 is a side view similar to Fig. 1 and partly broken away for the same purpose.
Specifically describing the invention and referring to the drawings, it will be ob served that an ordinary bedstead comprising posts 1 and side rails 2 is shown in connection with the invention, the latter comprising a frame composed of an intermediate section A and end sections B. The intermediate section A consists of a pair of spaced bars 3 adapted to rest upon the side rails of the bed, while sections B of the frame are of U-form, consisting of side portions 4 and end bars 5. The side portions 4: of each section B are provided at their inner ends with hollow gears 6 internally toothed, and the teeth of each gear arranged in mesh with the teeth of an idler gear 7 carried by a stud 8 journaled in a bearing provided on the inner side of an adj acent end of one of the bars 3. The idler gear 7 is arranged between the teeth of the gear 6 and a third gear 9 mounted for ro- Specification of Letters Patent.

tation upon a shaft 10. The shaft 10 has its opposite ends of many sided shape to permit of application thereto of a crank handle or similar operating member whereby the shaft may be rotated with its gears 9, there being two of the shafts 10 and each connecting one end section B with the midsect-ion A of the adjustable frame.
In the actual use of the invention, when a shaft 10 is turned, the gears 9 thereon are rotated in mesh with the gears 7, whereby the hollow gears 6 are actuated to raise or lower the sections 13 carried thereby, according to the direction in which the shaft 10 is turned. When the section B has reached the desired position, it is held in such position by means of a locking pin 11, having a finger piece at its outer end, said locking pin being inserted through an opening in an adjacent end of a side bar 3 of the mid-section A, and engaging with the teeth of the hollow gear 6 in a manner well shown in Fig. 4. By the above means, the adjustable frame comprising this invention may be so operated as to vary the positions of the end sections thereof at will and for the purposes hereinbefore referred to.
If desired a flexible covering or similar support may be applied to the sections of the frame. Preferably the end sections B of the device are movable freely within the space between the side rails of the bed, while the intermediate or mid-section A rests upon said side rails. The shafts 10 connect the sections together as well as afford operating devices for the gears as above described.
In Fig. 1 a spring 12 is illustrated as carried by the adjustable frame, and a mattress 13 is supported on the spring.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In combination with a bed comprising spaced side rails, an adjustable supporting frame comprising end sections and an illtermediate section, the intermediate section consisting of spaced bars adapted to rest upon the side rails of the bed, and each end section being of U-form, and movable up and down between the side rails of the bed, the side portions of each end section being provided with hollow gears at their inner ends, a shaft passing through the hollow gears and the adjacent end portions of the spaced bars of the intermediate section, idler gears journaled in the adjacent ends of the bars of the intermediate section and housed in the hollow gears of the end sections, said hollow gears having internal teeth meshing with those of the idler gears, operating gears arranged in the hollow gears and mounted for movement with the shaft and meshing with the idler gears, the shaft having its end formed to receive a device for turning said shaft, a locking pin arranged to pass through the outer ends of the bars of the intermediate section and engaging with the teeth of the hollow gears of the end section adjacent to hold the latter at predetermined adjustment. in testimony that I claim the foregoing as 15 my own, I hereunto attach my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
