D E. BISHOP.
yImprovement in4 Bed Bottoms.
N0. 125,783. l Patente-dAvpri|16,-1872.
i M/V ATENT OFFICE.
DAVID E. BISHOP, OF BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
IMPROVEMENT IN BED-BOTTOMS.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 125,783, dated April 16, 1872.
Specification describing certain Improvements in Bed-Bottoms, invented by DAVID E. BISHOP, of Baltimore, county of Baltimore and State of Maryland. l
My invention relates to the construction of a mattress or any other bed-bottom with flaps upon the ends thereof, which are to extend down over transverse rollers, one of which is journaled in the side rails near the head and the other near the foot of the bedstead, and connecting the outer ends of the flaps by means of spiral-Wire or other suitable springs, so that the bed-bottom Will embrace the rollers and be elastic, and yield, by means of the springs, to the Weight of a person upon the bed.
In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 represents a side view of a bed-bottom in connection with my improvements, and Fig. 2 a bottom view ot' the same.
A is the body of the bed-bottom; -B B, the flaps; O C, the side rails of the bedsteads; F
F,l the cross-rails, which may be placed Withinl or Without the rollers, as may be found most convenient; and E E, the rollers, having journais with suitable bearings in the side rails of the bedsteads. D D D are the springs, which maybemade ot' metal Wire in the spiral or other form,or of India rubber, or of any other suitable material. b b b b is a series of Wires or ribs, of any suitable material, fastened into or upon the flaps B B to aiford stift' and strong bearings for the springs, which are fastened to the material of the flaps by hooks, as shown in Fig. 2, so that when the ila-ps or springs may have become stretched from use or much weight upon the bed, and the bed yields too much, the springs may be unhooked and hooked again around another rib nearer to the roller; and in this manner the bed-bottom may be tightened up or let out at Will With great facility.
It will be observed that when the top of the bed is subjected to pressure the flaps do not slip upon the rollers, by which they might be Worn away by friction; but the two rollers simply revolve toward each other as the springs yield, and revolve from each other when the pressure is removed and the springs contract.
It is scarcely necessary to suggest how cheap, durable, and simple these improvements are.
In operation they are noiseless, and the Whole bottom, from one side to the other, participates in the movement When subjected to pressure upon one side only.
What I claim as my invention isl The combination of the bed-bottom A, provided With flaps B B, the rollers E E, and springs D D D, constructed and arranged substantially in the manner and for the purpose described and set forth.
DAVID E. BISHOP.
