To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN QUINCY ADAMS, Sn, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gouging-Tools, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to a gouging tool designed for glaziers and painters.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a simple and durable tool that can be advantageously used by glaziers and painters for removing indurate putty, paint scales, and for removing dirt and other matter from cracks and crevices.

Another object of this invention is to accomplish the above object by a tool that is simple in construction, durable, inexpensive to manufacture, easy to use, and highly eflicient for the purposes for which it is intended.

These and such other objects as may hereinafter appear are attained by the novel con struction to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawing forming a part of this specification, wherein there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that the construction of the tool can be varied or changed without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention.

A tool constructed in accordance with my invention comprises a shank 1 having the ends thereof reduced, as at 2 and 3. The re duced end 2 is provided with an anchor or double hook-shaped head 4 providing oppositely disposed transverse cutting edges 5, these edges being formed by the curved under side 6 of the head and the beveled outer side 7 thereof. The head 4 upon one side of the tool is beveled, as at 8, with the forward ends of the cutting edges 5 extending beyond the plane of the reduced end 2, as best shown in. Fig. 3 of the drawings, while the opposite side of the head is carried out of the plane of the reduced end 2, as at 9, to

The reduced end 3 of the shank 1 terminates in a head 10 approximately the same thickness as the shank 1, but of a greater width, said head being substantially rectangular in elevation. One of the vertical edges of the head 10 is beveled upon both sides, as at 11, to provide a knife edge 12, that can be used for applying putty or for hacking scales and other matter upon a surface. The cutting edge 12 is of greater depth than the opposite edge of the head. The end of the head is beveled in opposite directions, for portions of its length as at 13 and 14 to provide a pair of cutting edges. The beveling of the end of the edge for portions of its length in opposite directions provides an angularly-disposed rib 15 which connects the inner edge of the cutting edge 13 to the inner edge of the cutting edge 14.

The shank 1 is provided with transverse openings 16 and adapted to be clamped to the sides of said shank are oppositely disposed handle pieces 17, these pieces being held in position by screws, rivets, or other fastening means, as indicated at 18.

The cutting edges 5 of the head 4 and the cutting edge 12 of the head 10 can be used. for hacking indurate matter, the cutting edge 12 similar to a putty knife, and the edges provided by beveling the head 10, as at 13 and 14, used similar to a chisel.

The tool is made of light and durable metal with the cutting edges thereof hardened and tempered, and the handle pieces 17 made of Wood, bone, or other material.

Having now described my invention what I claim as new, is

1. A tool of the type described comprising a shank having the ends thereof reduced, an anchor-shaped head carried by one of the reduced ends of said shank and having the ends thereof provided with cutting edges and ahead carried by the other reduced end of said shank and having one of the side edges thereof beveled to provide a cutting edge and the end thereof formed with a pair of oppositely-disposed cutting edges.
