APPLICATION FILED AUG. 14, 1908.

WILLIAM A. PROUT, OF BRANFORD, CONNECTICUT.
PUTTY-KNIFE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 9, 1909.
Application filed August 14:, 1908. Serial No. 448,552.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WiLLIAM A. PROUT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Branford, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Putty-Knives; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the numerals of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in-
Figure 1, a perspective view of a putty knife constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 a broken plan view showing the scraper upon the blade. Fig. 3 a broken edfi: view showing the scraper.
y invention re ates to an improvement in putty knives, the object being to produce at a trifling extra cost, a utty knife of superior convenience and uti lty, inasmuch as it is also adapted for cleaning painted and other surfaces and raking out putty or other obstructions met with in the ordinary use of putty knives by a glazier or painter.
With these ends in view my invention consists in a putty knife having certain details of construction as will be hereinafter described and pointed out in the claim.
In carrying out my invention as herein shown, I locate a transversely arranged scraper 2 upon one face of the blade 3 of a putty knife which is furnished with an ordinary handle 4, the blade 3 being also of ordinary form. The scra er 2 is formed with a straight scraping-e ge 5 and its forward end is widened so that its forward corners project considerably beyond the edges of the blade to form, as it were, rakingteeth 6. As shown, the blade curves slightly rearward so as to give the teeth 6 a somewhat hooklike shape, whereby they are better adapted to perform their raking and other cleaning ofiices. The scraper 2 is by preference made independently of, and applied to the blade the use of which in the ordinary way it in no wise afl'ects.
I claim In a putty knife, the combination with the flat metal blade thereof, of a scraper transversely arranged upon one face of the blade toward the outer end thereof, and having a straight scraping edge, and widened at its forward end so as to project beyond the edges of the blade in the form of hook-like raking teeth.
In testimony whereof, I have signedthis specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM A. PROUT.
