Application filed June 23, 1998. Serial No. 439,991.
' To all whom it may concern:
- of the invention, such as will enable others skilled'in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in mattresses and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character which is air filled thereby assuring a'clean mattress.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a device of this character including novel means for holding the faces of mattress from becoming unduly: distended or bulging.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel device of this character which will be simple in construction, efficient and advantageous in pt'actice. and comparati ely inexpensive to manufacture.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of the details of construction and in the novel arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more particularly referred to..
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specification wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts. in-the several views Jand in which,
Figure 1 is a view in perspective of a mat tressconstructed in accordance with the invention, and, Fig. 2 lsa longitudinal section thereof.
In the drawings, 1 denotes an air bag formed preferably of rubber and given a proper configuration and the side and bottom face of this bag is provided with a covering 2 of canvas and the canvas together with the top face of the bag are covered with ticking 3. It has also been found best in practice that the bottom and sides of the bag 1 be formed heavier than the top so that the bag itself may assist in retaining the proper form of the bag in conjunction with the canvas coverlng 2.
In order that the top and bottom fa'ces of the bag may be held against bulging,
there are carried by the top and bottom faces of the bag 1 the inwardly projecting flexible ears 1 preferably of rubber provided with the perforations 5 through which passes the lacing cord 6, said ears on the top and bottom surfaces being arranged in staggered relation one with the other. The bag 1 is intended to be inflated by an ordinary air pump and for this purpose the nipple 7 is positioned at a corner of the bag at its under surface.
While it has been specified that this invention relates to mattresses, it is to be further mentioned that it can be employed in conjunctionwith sleeping bags, sofa pillows, pillows or any other article ofa similar nature.
I claim:
A mattress of the character described, comprising an air inflated elastic receptacle having its bottom and sides covered with canvas, and said canvas bottom and sides, together with the elastic top of said receptaole, covered with ticking. said receptacle having projecting inwardly from its top and bottom, upon the inside, ears, and lacing rove through said ears alternately from top to bottom throughout said receptacle, said top being formed inlayers superposed one with relation to the other, said canvas being. interposed between said elastic and ticking;
material and continuously encompassing said. bottom, sldes and ends of said receptacle;
said-receptacle having reinforced offset por-E tions along itslateral, end and corner edges, both at top and bottom, said offset portions being integral throughout and of frame-like outline.
