PATENT OFFICE.
OWEN T. BUGG, OF RUTHERFORD, NEW JERSEY.
MATTRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 2, 1918.
Application filed April 28, 1917. Serial N 0. 165,066.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, OWEN T. Boos, a citlzen of the United States, residing at Rutherford, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattresses; and I do hereby declare the followmg to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to cots, beds or other similar devices provided with a sanitary mattress, and has for its object to produce a device of this nature which will be simple in construction, efficient in use and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction and combinations of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which like numerals designate like parts in all the views Figure 1 is a perspective view partly broken away of a framework and covering or mattress made in accordance with this invention;
Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic sectional view showing the covering or mattress extendin over the cushioning members and secure to the lower side of one of the frame members;
Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of a portion of the framework; 0
Fig. 4 is a detail elevational v1ew of the parts shown in Fig. 3;
Fig. 5 is a diagrammatic plan view of the covering or mattress detached from the framework;
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a modified form of cushioning means; and
Fig. 7 is a diagrammatic sectional v1e w illustrating a modified form of mattress 1n position over the framework.
1 indicates any suitable framework, preferably composed of pipe sections olned at its four corners as by the upper members 2 and the lower members 3. The members 2 are provided with the laterally extending portions 4 and 5, and into the portions 4 fit the ends 6 of the cutaway side cushion supporting members 7, as best illustrated in Fig. 4.
Each portion 5 is preferably provided with a suitable socket or joint 8 into which fits the end 9 of thecutaway end cushion supporting members 10, as best illustrated in Fig. 3. Into each of the side cushion supporting members 7 fit the side cushions 12 which are preferabl ofrubber, cloth or other tubing contaimng air under pressure, and into the end cushionsupporting members 10 fitsimilar cushion members 13 which are also preferably of rubber tubing containing air under pressure.
There are two sides members 7, and two end members 10, as will be clear from the drawings, with the corresponding number of cushion members 12 and 13.
The lower corner or joint members 3 are provided with the side supporting portions 15 into which fit the lower side members 16 and which are conveniently made of pipe sections,.having on their lower sides the holding pins 17 as will be clear from Fig. 2. Into the members 18 of the lower joints 3 likewise fit the end members 19 which are also made of pipe sections and provided with holding pins 17, in all respects similar to the holding pins 17. Each of the lower joint members 3 is further provided with a vertically depending extension 21 to which is pivoted, as at 22, the leg members 23. The said joint members 2 and 3 are conveniently connected as by the vertical rod members 24, so that the side members 7 and 16, and the end members 10 and 19 form a rectangular framework as illustrated.
The legs 23 are adapted to be folded up along side of the side members 16, as illustrated in dotted lines in Figs. 1 and 4, and the end members 13 and 19 are adapted to be readily detached from their corresponding corner members 2 and 3 in the manner indicated in Fig. 3 so that the said legs 23 may be folded up out of the way, the sa1d end members removed and all of the parts snugly stowed together into a small space.
Passing over the framework above disclosed is the mattress proper or covering 26 preferably made of the shape illustrated in Fig. 5. This said mattress is provided with a plurality of rows of button-holes 27 along its sides and a plurality of rows of buttonholes 28 along its ends as shown, so that it may be passed over the cushions 12 and 13 and buttoned on the undersurtace-of the lower side members 16 and of thelower end members 19, all as will be clear from Figs. '1 and 2 of the drawings I a The function of a plurality of rows of button-holes is to take up the slack asthe mattress or covering stretches. There being no metal fastenings orfother metal attached to the covering 26, it is conveniently washed like any other fabric, and therefore; the sameean he k pt at all times. a lean and sanitary condition.
