OF ROME, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR 'I'O ROME METALLIC BED- STEAD COMPANY, OF HOME, NEW YORK, A. CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
BEDSTEAD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1, rain.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORTIMER G. MER- nrr'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rome, in the county of Oneida and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Bedsteaols, of which the following specification and accompanying drawings illustrate the invention in a form which I now regard as the best out of the various forms in which it may be e1nbodied.
Figure l is a perspective view of my device; Fig. 2 is a plan thereof; Fig. 3 shows my device applied to a head corner; Fig. 4 is a vertical section.
My invention relates to means for adequately securing the corner block joining the end and side bars of the main frame and the tubular post.
Referring to the drawing, A is the side bar, B the end bar and C is a corner block cast on the end of B and having a detachable wedging-rib connection with A. The corner block C has a semicircular recess which receives the tubular post D, embracing not more than one-half the circumference of the post so that the latter can be inserted in and removed from the recess. Inside of post D and opposite the seating point thereon of the corner block C is a semi-cylindrical clamp block E. A screw G having its head cast in the block C projects from the curved seat in that block through the inner wall of post D and through the clamp E and receives at its end a nut F seated in a retaining recess on the face of the clamp.
My present invention relates particularly to the conformation of the bearing faces of the block C and the clamp E against the post D and also the application of these connecting devices to a head corner piece as shown in Fig. 3 wherein the curved recess is formed on a diagonal surface at an angle both to the bar A and the bar B. The strains in that case are different from and more severe than those in the case of the foot corner shown in Fig. 2.
As appears most clearly in Fig. 4, the surface of the curved seat is hollowed out on both the corner block and clamp. On the corner block this leaves vertical gripping edges slightly curved while its horizontal edges have a slightly deeper curve than that of the post which it retains. This forms gripping projections at each corner of the corner piece. 011 the clamp it leaves the top and bottom edges projecting slightly beyond the center portion of its seating face, there being also a vertical groove or depression in the clamp opposite one of the vertical edges of the corner block. By reason of this conformation of the opposed surfaces, the wall of the tubular post is tightly gripped at the points of contact and between said points there is a tendency to warp or bend the material of the posts into the depressions between the projections and thereby securely hold the parts together. I-l'eretofore the head corner piece 011 a brass bedstead between the side and end bars has not been satisfactorily secured, the result being looseness at that point which is obvionsly objectionable.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination in a bedstead, of the main side bar, the main end bar, a tubular post, a recessed corner piece cast on the end bar but having a detachable connection with the side bar, a clamp in the post opposite the corner piece and a retaining screw, the recess of the corner piecebeing shaped with gripping edges and an intermediate depres- SlOIl.
2. The combination in a bedstead of the main side bar, the main end bar, a corner piece cast on the end bar but having a detachable connection with the side bar, a clamp, and a tubular post having its inner wall gripped between the corner piece and clamp, the opposite surfaces of the clamp and center piece having a depression on one face opposite a projection on the other face.
3. The combination in a bedstead of the main side bar, the main end bar, a corner piece cast on the end bar connected to the side bar and having a diagonal recessed face, a clamp, and a tubular post in the said recess having its inner wall gripped between the clamp and the corner piece by corner projections on said piece.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand, before two subscribing witnesses, this eighth day of October, 1909.
MORTIMER G. MERRITT.
