To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, ADMIRAL J. TVARREN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brush-Handle Sockets; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in devices for securing the handles to brooms or the like, and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts h ereinafter described and claimed.

The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character, which will be simple and durable in construction and comparatively inexpensi ve to produce.

The above and other objects, which will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, are accomplished by means of the construction illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,

The brush 1 here shown, has its head composed of an outer or top member 3 and an inner member 3 to which the bristles are secured. The member 3 is convex on its outer side. The inner member 3 has its ends Said members are secured together by bolts 3 near the ends thereof. v

The numeral 6 denotes the socket member of the fastening. This member is in the form of a casting having at its upper or outer end a substantially cylindrical socket 7 for the reception of the handle 8. The interior of the socket 7 is preferably slightly tapered, and at its lower or inner end are formed one or more inwardly-projecting lugs 9, which serve as stops to limit the inward movement of the handle in the socket. The lower end of the handle is preferably tapered to correspond to the taper of thesocket and, if desired, it may be effectively retained therein by a screw or similar fastening 10, passed through an aperture 11, formed in one side of ters-Patent, is,

the socket 7. The lower or inner end of the member 6 is enlarged to form an arc-shaped head 1 1, the lower face 12 of which is curved to fit the surface 3 of the brush head 2. Upon the center of the surface 12 at its end nearest the socket 7 is formed a projection 13, which is adapted to enter the groove 4 in the brush head.

In the opposite extended end of the portion 11 of the socket member is formed an aperture or opening 14, which is adapted to register or aline with the opening 5 in the brush head, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.

Extending through the openings 5, 14, is a screw or bolt 15, which has its head 16 engaged with the fiat bottom face of the head 2, and its threaded end 17 projecting above the enlarged end 11" of the socket member. Engaged with the threaded end 17 of the bolt is a wing nut 18, by means of which the socket member and brush head are securely clamped together.

From the foregoing, it will be seen that this construction securely attaches the handle to the brush at an angle, and that it permits the handle to be reversed when one side of the broom is worn away. This reversal is effected by removing the wing nut 18, disengaging the projection 13 from the groove 4, then swinging the socket member around, so that the projection engages the opposite side of the groove, and then applying the nut. It will be noted that the lugs at the bottom of the socket 7 prevent the handle from pressing against the block or head and also serve to strengthen the casting.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction and operation of the invention will be readily understood without requiring a more extended explanation.

Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention, as defined by the appended claim.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Let- The combination with a brush head having a curved upper surface, a transverse groove in said surface, and an aperture, of a socket member having a socket at its upper end and an enlarged lower end shaped to fit the curved bolt, a handle in the socket of said member,

to and a lug in said socket to limit the inward movement of the handle therein, substantially as described and for the purpose set forth.
