UNITED STATES GERTRUDE DAVIS, OF DORAN, VIRGINIA.
ENVELOP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 2, 1909.
Application filed August 18, 1908. Serial No. 449,079.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GERTRUDE DAvis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Doran, in the county of Tazewell and State of Virginia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Envelope, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of paper receptacles, and more particularly to envelops, and has for an object to provide means for effectively preventing tampering with the contents of the envelop during its transportation and to provide means whereby any portion of the envelop cannot be broken without detection.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent as the nature of the invention is better disclosed, and it will be understood that changes within the scope of the claim may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawing, forming a portion of this specification and in which like characters of reference indicate similar parts in the several views,Figure 1 is a rear view of the envelo p showing the same open, Fig. 2 is a rear view showing the envelop closed, Fig. 3 is a plan view of the blank from which the envelop is formed.
Referring now more particularly to the drawing, there is shown an envelop 1 comprising a front wall 2 having end flaps 3 and 4, a bottom flap 5 and a top fiap 6. The flap 4 is provided with a cutaway portion 7, and at each side of this cutaway portion this flap is provided with adhesive material 8. The Iiap 5 is provided with a cutaway portion 9, and at each side of this portion this flap is provided with a Wing 10 having a curved edge 11, as shown. The flap 5 is also provided with a substantially V-shaped tongue 12 located between the wings 10. The entire rear surface of the flap 5 is provided with an adhesive 13. The flap 6 is provided with wings 14, and intermediate of the wings the flap is provided with a substantially rectangular tongue 15. The wings 14 and the tongue 15 are provided upon their rear surfaces with adhesive material as shown at 16.
In practice, the flap 3 is folded on the dotted line A to lie upon the front wall 2 of the envelop, the flap 4 is folded on the line B to lie upon the flap 3, it being understood 1 that the adhesive material at each side of the cutaway portion having been previously moistened will adhere to portions of the flap 3. The flap 5 is folded on the line C and all of the adhesive material excepting that on the tongue 12 is moistened to engage portions of the flaps 3 and 4 respectively. After the contents of the envelop have been properly placed, the adhesive material 16 upon the flap 6 is moistened, and the said flap is folded on the line D in order to insert the tongue 15 between the flaps 3 and 4 whereby the adhesive material upon the tongue 15 will efiectively engage portions of the flap 3. The wings 14 of the flap 6 will effectively engage the outer surface of the wings 10 and portions of the flap 5 upon which said wings 10 are formed. The tongue 12 is finally engaged with a portion of the flap 6 as will be readily seen upon reference to Fig. 2 of the drawing.
It will be seen that a novel form of envelop is provided which cannot be opened without detection, and the construction is such that the adhesive material upon the various flaps of the envelop cannot be reached should an attempt be made to open the envelop by steaming the same as has been common in the opening of an ordinary envelop.
I claim:
An envelop comprising a front wall having end flaps, one of said end flaps having a cut away portion, adhesive material at each side of said cutaway portion adapted to be engaged with its opposite end flap, a bottom flap having adhesive material upon one side to engage portions of the end flaps, a top flap having adhesive material upon one side to engage portions of the bottom flap, a tongue carried by the top flap and provided with adhesive material upon one side to engage one of the end flaps and adapted to be disposed between said end flaps, and a tongue carried by the bottom flap and provided with adhesive material upon one side to engage a portion of the top flap.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GERTRUDE DAVIS.
I/Vitnesses i CLAUDE L. DAVIS, 1 C. E. DICKINSON.
