To all whom tt may concerni Be it known that I, JOHN BAILER IL- LIAMSON, a-citizen of the United States, residing at Louisville, in the county of J efterson and State of Kentucky, have invented a new and useful Condiment-Holder, of which the following is 'a specification.
The invention relates to improvements in condiment holders. 4
The object of the present invention is to improve the Construction of condiment holders, and to provide a simple, inexpensive and efiicient one, adaptecl to be readily operated to cover and uncover a plurality of discharge openings, through which the contents of the holder nay be Shaken, when the said openings are exposed( With these and other objects in view, the
i invention consists n the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter 'fully described, illustrated in the acconpanyng drawing, and p'ointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of Construction, within the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

1 designates a receptacle, open at the top and provided at opposite sides with parallel guides 2, consisting of 'half round ribs or heads and slidably engaged by a cap 3. The cap 3, which is 'constr'ucted of sheet metal, or other suitable material, is provided at opposite sides with longitudinal fianges 4, de- Pending from the sicles of the 'cap and curved to 'conform to the configuration of the guides 2, as clearly illustrated in Fig.
A of the drawing, whereby the cap is slidably interlocked with the receptacle. The cap consists of a flat plate provided with a cen- .tral dome-shaped protuberance 5, forming a finger piece and adapted to enable the slidable cap to be readily moved in either direction.
The slidablecap is provided at its front end with a plurality of discharge openings 6, formed by recessing the cap and adapted to be closed or covered by the front wall of the receptacle, when the cap is at the limit of its forward movement. The forward movement of -the cap carries the opening-S beyond the interier of the receptacle, so that the cap will form a perfect closure for the same. hen the cap is moved inwardly or backwardly from the closed position, shown in Fig. l to the open position shown in Fig. 2, the openings are arranged above and communicate with the interior of the holder. This enables the contents of the receptacle to be Shaken from the condiment holderin the ordinary manner.
The sliding'movement of the cap is limited in one 'direction by a lug` 7, formed integral with the cap and depending from the rear edge thereof, as clearly shown in Fig. 4 of the drawing. The lug engages the rear wall of the receptacle l, when the cap is closed, and the rearward or opening movement of the cap is limited by a pawl 8, pivoted by a rivet 9 to one of the side flanges 4 near the front end thereof and arranged 'to engage a shoulder 10, located at the upper portion of the acljacent side wall and preferably formed by recessing the same, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawing. The shoulder or stop 10 is located at the rear portion of the receptacle l and below the adjacent rib 2. The pawl, which is retained in position for engaging the shoulder *by friction, is disposed at a slight inclination, its rear end being located in advance of and spaced from the shoulder, when the cap is closed. The rearward movement of the cap carries the dog into engagement with the shoulder, which limits such opening movement. hen it is desired to open the condiment holder for filling or washin'g the same, the pawl is swung upwardly above the plane of the shoulder, which permits the cap to be drawn off the receptacle.
In Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawing is 'illustrated a modification of the invention, in
which the rearward movement of the cap i is limited by a removable stop ll, consisting i of a screw or pin tted in a socket of the receptacle and projecting horizontally from one of the half beads or ribs 12 at the rear end thereof. The depending flange 13 of the cap l t is provided with a recess or cut away portion 15, forming a front shoulder 16, located intermediate of the ends of the fiange and adapted to engage the stop ll for limiting the rearward movement of the slidable cap. l`he slidable cap is provided at its front With a series of perforations 17, forming discharge openings and adapted to be carried to and from the upper edge of the front Wall of the receptacle by the sliding movement of the cap. The cap is provided at its rear end with a depending lug 18 for limiting the forward movement of the cap, and the latter also has a domeshaped protuberance 19 to enable it to be easily operated. vVhen the stop ll is removed, the cap may be detaehed to afi'ord access to the receptacle for filling, cleaning, or the like.
Although the device has been described as a condiment holder, yet it will be readily apparent that it may be advantageously employed for holding any substance in powdered form, designed to be shaken from the receptacle.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A device of the class described comprising a receptacle open at the top and provided at opposite sides with' guides formed integral with the receptaele and arranged on the ontside of the opposite walls of the same, a cap for the receptacle slidabl 7 interloeked with the guides and forming a complete cover for the top of the receptacle and provided with a dscharge opening arranged to be carried to and from a wall of the receptacle by the sliding movement of the cap, and means for limiting the sliding movement in both directions.
2. A device of the class described eomprising a receptacle open at the top and provided with guides, a cap interloeked with the guides and freely slidable in both directions and When closed completely covering the entire top of the receptacle, said cap being provided with a discharge opening arranged to be closed by the adjacent Wall of the receptacle and carried to and from the same by the sliding movement of the cap, and means arranged on the outside of the reeeptacle for limiting the sliding movement of the cap in both directions.
3. A device of the class described comprising a receptacle open at the top and provided with guides, a cap entirely covering the top of the receptacle and freely slidable along the guides and enbracing the opposite walls i at the outside and interloeked with the said walls to prevent it from being lifted otl and means for limiting the slidng novenent of the cap in both directions and for permitting the removal of the eap from the receptacle.

5. A device of the class described eomprising a reeeptacle open at the top and provided with guides, a cap entirely etwering the top of the receptaele and freely slidable along the guides and embracing the opposite walls at` the outside and interlocked with the said walls to prevent it. from being lifted oil' a lug projeeting from the rear end of the cap and arranged to engage the outside of the receptacle for lin'iting` the forward movement of the cap, and means embodying a step for limiting the rearward movement of the cap, said .means being also adapted to release the cap for permitting the removal of the same from the reeeptaele.
(3. A device of the class described eomprising a receptacle open at the top and provided with a stop arranged on the outside of one of its walls, a eap slidably interloeked with the receptaele and completely covering the top of the same when closed said cap being provided with a' diseharge aperture arranged to be carried to and from the front wall of the receptaele by the sliding movement: of the (rap, and means earried by the eap and arranged outside the receptaele in position for engaging the stop to limit the rearuurd movement of the cap, said means also permitting a free forward n'iovement.
7. i\ device of the class described conprising a receptacle provided with a stop, a eap slidably interlocked with the receptaele and provided with a discharge aperture arranged to be earried to and from the front wall of the receptable by the sliding movement: of the cap and a pivoted pawl mounted on the cap and arranged to engage the stop and adapted to be moved out of the plane of the stop to permit the removal of the cap.
8. A device of the class described eomprising a reoeptaele provided at its top with opposite ribs forming guides. ar slidable eap having depending fianges eonforming` to the configuration of the ribs and slidably connecting the cap with the reeeptacle, a lug` projecting from the cap and arranged to engage the reeeptacle to limitthe movement of the cap in one direction, and a movable locking device arranged to engage the receptacle for liniting the movement of the cap in' the opposite direction, said novable g looking device being also adapted to release the cap to pernit the same to be removed from the receptacle.
9. A device of the class described comprising a receptacle provided With opposite ribs and having a shoulder located adjacent to one of the ribs at the rear portion thereof, a cap provided With depending flanges slidably engagng the ribs, means rigd With the cap for engaging the receptacle to limit the movement of the cap in one direction, and a looking device pivoted to the cap and arranged to engage the said shoulder for limiting the movement of the cap in the opposite direction.
10. A device of the class described comprsing a receptacle open at the top and provided on the outside of its opposite walls With guiding ribs a cap eXtending entirely over the top of the receptacle and provided with flanges slidably interlocked With the guiding ribs to prevent it from being lifted 'rom the receptacle, said cap being also provided at the front With discharge openings arranged to be carriedto and from the front wall of the receptacle by the sliding movement of the cap, a lug projecting from the cap and arranged to engage the receptacle to limit the forward movement of the said cap, and a movable looking device arranged on the outside of the receptacle and carried by the cap for detachably securing the cap vlal nun to the receptacle and 'or linitng the movement of the cap in one direction.

A device of the class described comprisng a receptacle open at the top and provided With guides, a cap entirely covering the top of the receptacle and slidable along the guides and embracing the opposite walls of the' receptacle at the outside of the same and intel-locked With the said Walls to prevent it from being lifted off, said cap being also provided With a raised portion 'or protubera'ce and having discharge openings in position to be carried to and from one of the walls of the receptacle by the sliding movement of the cap, and means 'or limiting such sliding movement of the cap.
12. A device of the class described comprising a receptacle open at the top and formed at opposite sides thereof With horizontal guiding portions, a cap provided at opposite sides With depending horizontal flanges bent inWardly to embrace the guiding portions of the receptacle and sldably interlock the cap With the same to prevent the said cap from being lifted ofi' the receptacle, and means for limiting the sliding movement of the cap.
