To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, CHARLES H. Foss, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Milaca, in the county of Millelacs and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and Improved Can-Closure, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in can closures, and has for an object the provision .of an improved swinging covering member which is limited in its movement so as to be always ready for use.
Another object of the invention is to provide a closure for opening the top of a can, box or the like arranged with an inner and outer plate and held in place by connecting members which hold the plates in alinement while allowing a movement toward and from the opening.
In the accompanying drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a can with a closure embodying the invention applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a top plan view on an enlarged scale of the can and closure shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a section through the upper part of the can shown in Fig. 2, the same being taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a detailed fragmentary sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 indicates a can or box of any desired kind provided with a lid 2 also of any desired kind, as for instance a lid designed to telescope over the can 1 as shown in Fig. 3. In many instances it is not desirable to remove the cover 2 when a small quantity of the contents in can 1 is desired. To provide means for an easy removal of all of the contents or a small portion thereof an aperture 7 is provided in the covering or top 2. In order that this aperture may be maintained closed when not in use an outer plate 3 and an inner plate 4 are arranged adjacent thereto, these plates being pivotally connected with the top 2 by a pivotal pin 5 which extends through both plates and the top 2 (Fig. 4). This eifectually connects the plates together and pivotally mounts the same but in order that the plates may continually snugly fit the top 2 a retaining pin 6 is passed through both of the plates as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, said pin extending through the center of aperture or opening 7 when the plates are in their nor mally closed position. An arc-shaped slot 7 extends from the aperture 7, the same being struck from the center of pin 5 so that the pin 6 may be passed into the slot, thereby allowing a substantially complete uncovering of the plate 3. In order that the slot 7 may be closed when aperture 7 is closed a lug or enlargement S is provided on each of the plates, as shown in Fig. 2. It will be observed that the head of the pin 6 extends an appreciable distance above the plate 8 so that the same may be engaged by the hand of the operator for more or less effectually opening and closing the closure.
That I claim is- 1. In a closure of the character described, the combination with a body having an opening therein, of a pair of plates, one of said plates being arranged on each side of said body, said aperture having an arcshaped slot extending therefrom, a pivotal member extending through both of said plates and said body for connecting the plates with said body and the plates together at one point, and a second pin extending through said plates, said second pin extending through said aperture when the plates are covering said aperture, said second mentioned pin being positioned so as to move into said slot when said plates are moved so as to uncover said aperture.
2. In a closure of the character described, the combination with a body provided with a discharge opening and having a slot extending therefrom, a pair of plates arranged on each side of said body, pivotal means for connecting said plates with said body so that the plates may move pivotally so as to cover said opening and so as to expose said opening, a second pin extending through both of said plates and through said opening for holding said plates in alinement, said second pin being adapted to move into said slot when the plates are moved away from said opening, and a slot covering extension projecting from each of said plates for covering said slot exteriorly and interiorly when said plates are covering said opening.
