GUN-STOCK.
Specicaton of Letters Patent.
Patented June 4, 1907.A
Application led November 12,1906. Serial No. 343.000.
in the county of Douglas and. State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gun-Stocks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in gun stocks, and has for its primary object, to produce a gun stock having a chamber or chambers in the butt end thereof for the reception of tools or implements, and to afford a convenient cover for said chambers, said cover serving as the butt plate on the end of the gun stock.
To attain the desired objects, my invention consists of a gun stock having a series of implement-receiving chambers therein, and a spring-pressed butt plate hinged to cover said chambers; and the invention further consists in certain other novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1, is a side elevation of a gun stock embodying my invention, parts being broken away and in sectionto more clearly illustrate the parts. Fig. 2, is a rear end elevation of the same, with the cover in the released posi tion. Fig. 3, is a perspective view of one of the implements which may be carried in the stoclr, which in this case, is a shell extractor. Fig. 4, is a similar view of a bayonet or knife attachment, adapted to be concealed in the stock. Fig. 5, is a side elevation of a modiiied form of the invention. Fig. 6, is an end elevation thereof, the cover being open. Fig. 7, is a sectional view of the hinge and latch construction.
In the drawings: the numeral 1, designates an ordinary gun stock, having applied to the butt end thereof, a fiat plate 2, which is secured by screws or suitable fastenings 3,
and is further provided with integral attaching lugs 4, which embrace the sides ofthe stock.
I will first describe the construction illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2.
At the upper end, the plate 2, is provided with a pair of rip-standing ears 5, and a cover plate or cap 6, is formed with a lug 7, which is pivoted between said ears. A fiat spring S, is secured to the plate 2, adjacent the hinge connection, the free end of which bears in the recessed or bulging portion 9, in the cover, exerting its tension to force the cover open. This cover plate which is ordinarily closed, forms the butt plate to the stock, and the bulging portion near the upper end thereof forms a convenient abutment to engage the shoulder of the user and materially assists in holding the gun to the shoulder. A dog 10, is pivoted in a recess 11, in the stock near the lower portion thereof, and an extension or plunger 12 on the dog projects through an opening 13, in the attaching lug.v
The free end of the dog is adapted to engage a lug or hook 14, on the cover plate, and is held in engagement therewith by a spring 15. A stop block 16, limits the outward throw of the dog.
-Substantially in the center of the butt, the stock is formed with. a recessed or countersunk portion 17, extending from which, are a pair of longitudinal openings or passages 18, adapted to receive a screw driver or similar tool and a bayonet 19, the clamping band 2O of the bayonet being engaged in the countersunk portion 17, and the tool passed through said band. A thumb screw 21, is mounted up on the bayonet for clam ing it up on the gun barrels, and is formed witii a notched portion 22, to serve as a sight. A pair of circular openings 23, and a rectangular opening 24, are also formed in the stock for the reception of a file, paper and pencil, and a shell eX- tractor 25, or for similar devices as desired.
In the modified form of the invention as illustrated in Figs. 5, 6 and 7, the stock is formed with the chambers in the end thereof as before, and a butt plate 25, is secured on the end of the stock in the same manner as described. In this instance, however, the cover plate and butt plate have hinge connection at one side instead of at the end of the plate, as shown at 26, and the cover plate may be plain on its outer surface or ornamented as desired. A latch hook or lug 27 is provided on the cover at a point opposite the hinge, and is adapted to be engaged b the spring-pressed latch 28, said latch adapted to be o erated to release the cover, by means of the utton 29. A spring 30, is secured to the butt and engages the inner face of the ycover to force the same outward or open.
My improvement is specially adapted to rifles and will prove of great value to sharpshooters and such.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the drawings, it will be evident that I have provided convenient means for carrying miscellaneous useful articles in the stock of a gun which will not hinder the IOO IIO
uses of the gun or mar the same, have provided an improved butt late for the stock, and have accomplished al the objects herein set forth.
I claim:
1. A gun stock having o enings in the butt end thereofI a butt late aving integral attaohing lugs seeurec to said end and' formed with openings corresponding to the openings in the stock, a pair of ears at one edge of the plate, a spring secured adjacent the ears, a cover plate having a lug hinged between said ears formed with a swelled portion to receive the spring and at its opposite end with a hooked lug, and a spring pressed keeper pivoted in the stock to engage the hooked lug and having an extension for operating the same. v
end thereof, a butt plate having integral attaohing straps engaging the sides of the stock,
. and formed with openings in alinement with the openings in the stock7 a pair of ears formed on one side edge of the butt plate, a cover plate hinged between said ears, a spring secured at the hinge connection to force the plate open, a hooked lug on the cover plate opposite the hinge connection, a pivoted keeper in the stock to engage the lug, and a spring to normally hold the keeper in engagement with the lug.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANK BALSON. Witnesses:
D. E. CHAPIN, J. W. MARTIN.
