Specification of Letters'ratents Application filed September 25,1913; "Serial110,791,877}
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHARLns E. SULLIVAN, a citizen of the-United States, residing at Mill City, in the county of Marion and State of Oregon, have invented-certain new and useful Improvements in Logging Butt- Hooks, of which the following isa specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing."
This invention relates to hooks and par ticularly to that kind employed in logging known as butt-hooks for use on the end of a cable used by lumbermen inhauling logs.
The object of this invention is to provide a hook of the kind above describedthat is strong, durable and which will 1firmlyengage the chain or other object to which it is connected.
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved means for holding the hook proper in a lockedor closed position when the same is in engagement with a chain or other object.
With these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed;
In the accompanying'drawing: Figurel is a perspective view of the improved hook. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the hook with one of the side plates broken away and'the eye shown in section.
Referring to the parts by reference numorals 10 designates the side' plates of the housing which have positioned between them the spacing block 11, said plates and block are held together by the rivets12. Formed in the block 11 is a longitudinally extending slot 13 having an enlarged outer end portion lt which has a cut-out portion 15 forming the shoulder 16 leadingtherefrorn. It will be seen that the slot 13 formed in the block 11 constitutes a pocket or recess when the device is assembled by means of the side plates 10. A longitudinally extending bore 17 is formed in the block 11 at the opposite end to that of the enlarged opening 14: and communicates with the slot 13.
Positioned in the bore 17 and extending through the pocket or recess formed by the slot 18 and the enlarged opening 14: is a plunger rod 18 having a head 19 on one end, said head 19 adapted to be positioned in the notch 20 of the block 11 to limit the the plunger rod from'that of the limiting head 19. Wound around'the plunger rod 20-isa 'coil spring 22 which has one end resting on the bottom of the slot 13 and the other end positioned against theunder or inner face of the latch member 21 so as to normally hold the latch in aposition as shown in Fig. 2. e
The hook proper is plvotally mounted between the side plates 10 by means of'the pin 23. The securing eye 2 1 is also piv-' otally mounted to the housing by means of thepin 23. The hook proper 25-has the usual bill 26 the end of which isadapted to be positioned between the shoulder 16 and the latch member 21 when in a lockedpo sition. A cut-out or finger inserting portion 27 is provided in one of the side plates 10 to, provide means for the depression or unlocking of the latch member 21.

' @mo yement of i the red. A latch member 21 is secured to the opposite end of It will be seen from the foregoing description that the chain'or cable is attached to the eye 24 and the hookproper 25'passes around the choke line of a log and the bill 'isrpositioned as shown in Fig. 2, and, of
course, the same can not be withdrawn until thelatch member 21'is depressed. Although this invention has been described and especially'designed for use in lumberingand is generally known as the butt-hook, the improvement may be embodied in other kinds of hooks particularlyrthose ofthe general classof snap-hooks It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of this invention without departing from thespirit thereof. fine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described, but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed. 7
Having thusdescribed theinvention, what is claimed as new, is:
As a new article of manufacture a logging butt hook comprising a block, said block provided with a centrally located It is therefore not wished to con-' pocket, a plunger carried by said block, a
spr-lng'mounted upon said plunger, a latch member carried by the outeroend of said plunger, a hook pivotally secured to said block and provided with an inwardly extending bill, said block provided with a bill receiving cut out portion, said body pro- Q d I 1,161,751
