To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE A. BLAKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in valves of the character or typethat are closed and held closed by pressure of the fluid that passes through the passage controlled by the valve; and the object of the invention is to provide means by which the sudden closing of the valve and consequent water-hammer are prevented.
The invention is applicable to valves for controlling the passage of steam, vapor, air, or any fluid under pressure; but as it is particularly adapted for use with faucets for water under high pressure such an embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the ac companying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view through a high-pressure Water-faucet constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a detail view of the valve-guide. Figs. 3 and 4 illustrate a slightly-modified form of the invention.
Referring to the drawings, the faucet is shown as consisting of a tubular body or casing 1, the interior of which is divided into two chambers or compartments by an inwardly-extending annular rib 2, the passage through which is adapted to be closed by a valve 3. The stem of said valve extends across the chamber 4, communicating with the discharge-opening 5, and through a suitable stuffing-box in one end of the faucet body or casing. At its free end said valvestem is provided with a suitable cross-bar or handle 6. As shown, the body of the valve is detachably connected to the stem, and the front face thereof is covered by a suitable washer 7, which is adapted to be held against the valve seat formed on or by the rear face of the said inwardly-extending projection 2.
At its rear end the body 1 is provided with an external screw-thread, by means of which it can be securely but detachably connected to a suitable inlet-pipe 8, a gasket 9 being preferably arranged between the end of the faucet and the adjacent surface of said inletpipe.

which maybe of various forms and supported in any suitable manner, is so. proportioned and arranged that the fluid-passage11,;formedbetween it and the walls of the valve chamber,
corresponds or is equal in area to thearea of the inlet-pipe, whereby said guide offers no obstruction to the passage of fluid through the passage the outlet to which is closed by the valve 3. As shown, said guide'consists of a cylinder having at oneiend 31123111111131 flange 12, adapted to enter a grQQve'orrecess formed at the rear end of the faucet-.bodyand to be securely held in position by the connection between the faucet and its inlet or supply pipe 8. In the wall of said cylinder are formed a series of openings or ports 13, through which fluid entering the faucet from the pipe 8 can freely pass to the aforesaid passage 11. Within the guide-cylinder 10, between the ports 13 and the valve 3, is secured a transverse partition or diaphragm 14, having a suitable number of relatively small openings or passages 15.
The rear end of the valve 3 extends into the forward end of the tubular guide 10 when in position to close the outlet of the fluidpassage 11, and said valve is adapted to reciprocate in the space between the forward end of said guide and the partition or diaphragm 14 therein. Said partition or diaphragm acts to retard the flow of the fluid directly on the rear face of the valve, and therefore when the external pressure employed to open the valve is Withdrawn the valve will be closed gradually and without objectionable noise. When the valve is closed, it is subjected to the full fluid-pressure and is held close against its seat.
While, as shown in the drawings, the invention is particularly adapted for use with faucets for water under highpressure, yet, as aforesaid, it is also applicable to fluid-pressure valves for other purposes and differing in construction from the one selected for purposes of illustration.
In Figs. 3 and 4 is illustrated aslightlymodified form of valve-guide. In this embodiment of the invention the valve-guide consists of a bell-shaped bod the mouth of which is arranged adjacent t e valve 3 and in the opposite end of which are formed a plurality of relatively small openings or passages 15. The ports 13*, forming the main fluidpassage, are formed in the flaring walls of the valve-guide.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a fluid-passage, of a valve adapted to reciprocate in said passage and to close the outlet therefrom, a tubular guide for the valve having apertures formed in its side walls so that it oflers practically no obstruction to the flow of fluid, and means between said apertures in the guide and the valve for controlling the flow of fluid against the valve, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination with a supply-pipe; of a faucetconnected with said pipe, a tubular and aperturedvalve-guide having a flange at one end-seated in a recess in the faucet, a valve adap'tedto reciprocate in said guide,
and a perforated diaphragm arranged within and extending across said guide between the apertures therein and the valve, substantially as and for the purpose described.
3.1 The' combination with a supply-pipe, of
through said valve-casing, and a tubular valve-guide having at one end a radial flange extending into a recess in the pipe and secured therein by the valve-casing, said guide supporting means for controlling the flow of fluid against the valve.
4. The combination with a fluid-pressure valve, of a tubular valve-guide supported within the valve-chamber and having a series of ports or openings forming part of the fluidpassage controlled by the valve, and a perorated diaphragm or partition extending across said guide between the ports therein and the valve, for the purpose described.
