Description

G. E. SWYNEY.
WASHBASIN.
APPLICATION FILED 111111.?, 1911.
Patented Sept. 17, 1912.
GEORGE E. SWYNEY,0F SEATTLE, WASHINGTON.
WASHBASIN'.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 17, 1912.
Application filed March 7, 1911. Serial No. 612,929.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. SWYNEY, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city of Seattle, in the county of King and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in IVashbasins, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has for its primary object the provision of a simplified and improved construction of the above type wherein an intake provided within the basin or bowl, is connected with a suitable source of fluid supply through valve mechanism arranged in proximity to the basin or bowl for ready operation.
Other objects will be set forth as my description progresses, and those features of construction, arrangements and combinations of parts upon which I desire protection, succinctly defined in my annexed claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawing wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a vertical section of a wash basin or bowl equipped and constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary elevation of the basin or bowl with a portion of the extension or back removed, and illustrating the valve mechanism in section. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of an interchangeable plug carrying a different type of valve, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section of a plug showing a further modication of valve mechanism.
Referring to the drawing by numerals of reference, 1 indicates a wash basin or bowl, as for example -of the stationa type, the same being formed in its wall with an. inlet 11 and provided with an upwardly projecting extension or back 2 which is formed with a passage 12 for conducting fluid to inlet 11.
In extension 2 I mount a faucet 3, the same comprising an outer casing 4, secured in extension 2 by clampin nuts 5 which have threaded engagement wlth casing 4 and impinge respective faces of said extension, and having its rear end portion suitably threaded for connection with either of the usual hot and cold water pipes, as will be readily understood.
Casing 4 is provided in its forward end portion with a chamber of greater diameter than its intake opening 4, thereby providing an internal shoulder 6 on which a removable plug 7 is normally seated and removably held by a cap nut 8, threaded on the projecting forward end portion of casing 4.
Plug 7 constitutes a casing for a valve 9, the same being provided with an inlet port 9 and with a plurality of outlet ports 9 registering with the intake opening 4 and outlet opening 4 respectively, of the faucet casing 4. Outlet openings 4 communicate with a passage 10 extending about casing 4 and leading to passage 12.
In the form of valve mechanism shown in Fig. 1, valve 9 is'controlled for operation through a stem 13 having threaded engagement in plug 7, as shown.
In Figs. 3 and 4 I have shown plugs indicated at 7', 7 respectively carrying valves 9 of a different type with respect to valve 9, which plugs can be substituted for plugs 7 as desired. This interchangeable feature, however, forms no part of the present invention, the same being claimed in my application Serial No. 612,930 executed on even date herewith.
The valves 9*1L are of a well known type, the same being moved to a closed positlon by suitable springs as 14, and opened through rotation of their spindles 15, carrying engaging parts 16 for riding on suitable cam tracks of their plugs, as shown.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America,
A wash basin formed in its wall with an inlet, an upwardly projecting back for said basin formed with an opening enlarged intermediate its ends to provide an annular chamber and having a passa e leading from such chamber to the inlet o said basln, a cyhndrical casing seated. in the reduced end portions of the opening of said back and projecting outwardly therefrom, said casin bethereof for controlling the flow of fluid lng formed 'with a valve seat and wit an through the casing. 10 outlet communicating with the chamber `of Signed at Seattle, Washington this 25th said back, means for securing said casing to day of February 1911.
said back comprising nuts having threaded GEORGE E. SWYNEY. engagement on said casing and engaging the Witnesses:
adjacent faces of said back, and a valve in CHAs. P. HARRIS,
said casing for engagement with the seat H. R. LEWIS.
