Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHRISTIAN WILHELM SOHOU, a subject of the King of Denmark, residing at Antvorskov, near Slagelse, Denmark, have invented a new and useful Apparatus for the Production of Line Designs on Bricks and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for the production of line designs upon the surfaces of bricks and the like.
In order to roughen the surfaces of bricks or 'to form patterns upon them or to render them more suitable for the adhesion of mortar, a number of methods have heretofore been adopted wherein either the pattern is applied by hand or the surface is roughened by sprinkling the molded brick with sand.
According to this invention the brick has cut into its surface a pattern adapted to serve as ornamentation or where the brick is used for 'the backs of walls or the like to enable the mortar to adhere more firmly to the surface of the brick, the smooth surface of machine-made bricks being, as is well known, little adapted for this purpose. To this end I combine with the brick-machine a device comprising a number of plates having teeth,

The arrangement comprises, essentially, a three or four sided frame R, which is fixed immediately iilffIOllt of the throat or die of the machine and is provided with grooves in which slide the flat bars A A A The bar A is actuated by means of a lever or rod P, which is controlled by an eccentric, preferably mechanically driven, and the movement of the bar A is transmitted to the bars A and A by means of the bell-crank lever B.
1 While, therefore, the bar A is reciprocated in 1 a horizontal plane, the bars A and A are reciprocated vertically in such a manner that when the bar A is moving upward the bar A is moving downward, and vice versa. Serrated platesC, C and C are adjustably secured to the bars or slides A, A and A respectively, so that they partake of the movements of the said bars or slides. It will therefore be seen that the teeth of the plates are pressed into the moving clay mass and roughen the surface of the same to a greater or less depth, according to the adjustment of the plate. If desired, for increasing the hold of the mortar the incisions in the clay can be undercut. In this case the plates C, 0*, and C are advantageously placed at an inclination and not at right angles to the surfaces of the clay mass. According to the speed of motion of the plates C, C and C and of the clay slab or mass, the surface of the latter is marked with more or less strongly curved sinuous incisionsor grooves. If it is desired to roughe ii tlie bottom or under side of the brick also, a four-sided frame is made use of and fitted with a fourth serrated plate. I The shape and depth of the incisions may be adjusted or varied as desired. Furthermore, the serrated plates may be moved independently of one another and in a curved mL tll;1 OV8I the clay mass. This construction is s own clearly in Figs. 4, 5, and 6, Where (1 represents the driving-shaft, and b the lower shaft, each being provided with two cranks a, connected together by means of rods e. Plates C C are secured to these rods 6. The driving-shaft a carries in addition two bevelwheels f and g, which engage with the wheels and g and serve for driving the upright shafts h and i. The shafts h and v; are also provided with cranks c, connectedtogether by a rod k, to which the plate 0, is secured. When the driving-shafta is rotated, the plates which are fitted to the rods 6 and 7c move in a curved path with respect to the issuing clay mass, so that incisions of predetermined curved shape are produced upon the said clay. If the under side of the clay mass T is also to be provided with incisions, it is merely necessary to provide the upright shafts h and i with cranks at the lower ends also and to connect the said cranks by means of a rod and to secure thereon a fourth plate having teeth. The parts a, b, h, and i in lieu of being provided with cranks may be furnished with eccentrics.
Bricks made as above described ossess the advantage, in comparison with bric s of equal cost made in the ordinary presses and with dry-pressed molded bricks and lime and sand bricks, that they are provided with an ornamentation upon their surface and that mortar adheres to them more efficiently.
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of my said invention and in what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that what I claim is 1. Apparatus for the production of designs upon the surface of moving clay masses,
' comprising a marking device, means for supporting same and means for reci rocating said marking device, said marking evice being in continuous contact with the moving clay mass, substantially as described.
2. Apparatus for the production of designs upon the surface of moving clay masses, comprising marking devices, means for supporting same and means for reciprocating said marking devices, said marking devices being in continuous contact with the moving clay mass, substantially as described.
3. A paratus for the production of designs upon t e surfaces of moving clay masses, comprising a frame, marking devices secured in holders adapted to slide in said frame and means for imparting motion to said holders, whereby each marking device travels longitudinally in one plane, substantially as de scribed.
4. In an apparatus for the production of designs upon the surface of moving clay masses, the combination with a main part, of a support adapted to slide in said support and means for causing the travel of said marking device longitudinally in one plane, substantially as described.
5. In an apparatus for the production of designs upon the surfaces of moving clay masses, the combination with a frame, of a lurality of sliding supports mounted in said rarne, angularly disposed to each other, marking devices mounted in said supports and means for simultaneously reciprocating said supports whereby at least two of said marking devices will move in op osite directions and score two or more sur aces, of the moving clay masses angularly disposed to each other, substantially as described.
6. In an apparatus for the production of designs upon the surfaces of moving clay masses, the combination with a frame, of sliding supports mounted in said frame and angularly disposed to each other, marking devices mounted in said supports and means for reciprocating said supports and marking devices, whereby two or more surfaces of the moving'clay mass, angularly disposed to each other, are simultaneously scored, substantially as described.
7. Apparatus for the production of designs upon the surface of moving clay masses, comprising marking devices, means for supporting same in an inclined position and means for reciprocating said marking devices, substantially as described.
8. A device of the kind described, provided with marking devices producin a series of wavy parallel scores and means or o crating said marking devices, substantial y as described.
9. A device of the kind described provided with marking devices for roducing a series of continuous wavy parallelscores and means for operating said marking devices, substantially as described.
10. In a device of the kind described, the combinationwith a frame, of a plurality of marking devices angularly disposed and slidably mounted therein, bell-crank levers connecting said marking devices and meansfor imparting motion to one of said marking devices, substantially as described.
11. Apparatus for the production of de signs upon the surfaces of movin cla masses comprising. a frame provide grooves, bars adapted to slide in said grooves, a lever actuating one of said bars, a bellcrank lever and serrated plates adjustably secured to said bars, substantially as described.
