IMPROVED HOT-BED SASH AND FRAME.

`Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 81,881, dated September 8, 18.68.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, MATTHEW GRIDGE, of Allegheny City, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new `and useful Improvement in Hot Bed Sash and Frame; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making a part of this speciflcation, in which- Figure l is a plan View of my improved hotbed sash. Fig. 2 is a section through the line w :v of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a cross-section through the line y y of Fig. l.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts in each.

The nature of my invention consists in the construction of grooved sliding sash-bars for hot-beds, skylights, &c., properly tongued so as to slide in the grooves of a sash-frame; also, in making a tight joint between the glass and the grooves of such sliding sash-bars by the use of hemp, iiax, or other fibrous article dipped in or covered with oil, paint, or other water-proof composition; and, lastly, in securing such sash-bars and glass in position by a slotted following sash bar or rail.

. To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and manner of use.

The sash frame or box a a a I make in any ordinary way, except that the lower end bar a is grooved to receive a tongue, c, on or near the end of each rail b. The opposite end of the rail b is shouldered, so as to rest against or t into the opposite end a of the box; or it may be tongued also, and play in a similar groove. One rail, b', is made stationary at the side of the box. It is also grooved on one side to receive the panes of glass d, and the other rails, b, are grooved on both sides for the It is obvious that the rails b may slide from side to side.

The panes of glass, of as nearly a uniform width as practicable, are placed with their opposite edges in the grooves of consecutive bars b, and so as to overlap each other slightly, as at d. The bars b are slid up, one after another, as the panes of glass d are placed in, and the following-bar f closes up, and, being fastened to the slide of the box c, holds all securely in place. But to make the followingbar f properly adjustable, I make slots e, extending crosswise, and fasten the bar f down by the headed screws c. In this way I provide for slight inequalities in the width of the glass.

In order to secure a water-proof joint between the panes of glass d and the grooved bars b b' f, I dip ahempen cord,"t, in oil,paint, or other water-proof mixture, and place such cord along the bottom of each groove in the sides of the bars b b f before the glass is inserted. Then, the glass being pnt in as above described, the bars b f being forced up and fastened, I secure a cheap, durable, easily constructed, and tight covering for hot-beds and other similar uses. Any fibrous article may be used for packing the panes of glass instead of a hempen cord.

I also provide for Ventilating the hot-bed, without raising the sash, by inserting, at suitable intervals, a pane of glass, d, slightly less in size than the other panes, d. This pane d may be then easily opened and closed at pleasure.

The advantages of this construction of devices are numerous. The frame and sash are easily and cheaply made, and are exceedingly durable. The glass, when broken, is easily replaced, and when not in use may be removed. Other lesser objections to the sash in ordinary use are obviated. Y

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

I. In a hot-bed sash, the sliding rails or bars b, constructed and used substantially as and for the purposes hereinbefore set forth.

2. A slotted following-sash bar or rail, f, which forms one side of the sash-frame, and which holds the other sash-bars and the glass securely in position, substantially as above de scribed.
