Description

t mJy-fl UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE...
IMPROVED WINDOW FRAME AND SASH.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 50,393, dated October 10, 1865.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, UYRUS B. SHAW, of Brooklyn, inthe county of Kings and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sash and Window Framesyand I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
The present invention consists in forming the joints of the sashes of a window with each other and with the sides of the window-frame or casing in such a manner that when the window is closed they shall be sufficiently close as to prevent the entrance of air, moisture, rain, or snow through the same into the interior of the dwelling-house, building, or other structure to which they may be applied, the advantages of which are well known to all.
In accompanying plate of drawings my improvements are illustrated, Figure l being a front view of the window frame and sashes upon the outside; Fig. 2, a vertical section through. the same, taken in the plane of the line a; a', Fig. 1; and Fig. 3, a transverse horizontal sect-ion of the same, taken in the plane of the line y y, Fig. 1.
a a in the drawings represent the windowy frame, made of suitable size and shape, and of any ofthe ordinary materials used therefor, in which, and moving iu proper guides thereof, are hung the upper and lower sash-frames, b and c, each having glass panes el d, inserted and fastened iu them by the usual modes.
In the two side rails, ff, of both the upper and lower sash-frames, b and c, and the upper rail, g, of the former and the bottom rail, h, of the latter are formed, in any suitable manner, similar square-shaped grooves Z Z, for the whole length or extent thereof, corresponding to which grooves, and iu the proper positions therefor around the inner surfaces of the Window-frame, are tenen-strips m m, of the proper size and shape to fit sufciently close in the same to prevent the entrance of air or moisture between the joint of the sash-frames with the window-frame, a similar-shaped groove, u, and tenon o being formed in the contiguous surfaces p p, respectively, ofthe upper and lower rails, g and c", of the upper and lower sashframes, b and c, so that when closed they will forni aclose-fittin g joint, as plainly represented in Fig. 2.
From the above description it is obvious that by the manner in which the joints of the sashframes with each other and the window-frame are formed the entrance of air or moisture through the same is practically prevented, and in a simple, cheap, and economical manner, and without in the least defacing the appearance ofthe window and sash frames.
` In lieu of grooving the edges of the sashframes, as explained, and aflXing or forming corresponding-shape tenon-strips upon the inner surfaces of the window-frame, they may be reversed iu positions; and, furthermore, they may be made of various shapes and sizes other than that described, without departing from the principles of my invention, as hereinbefore stated.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The construction of sash and window frames herein described, for the purpose specified.
CYRUS B. SHAW. Witnesses ALBERT W. BROWN, C. L. TOPLIEE.
