GARMENT-SUPPORTER- Specification of Letters Patent.
iatenteol April 1'7, 1906.
Application filed June 3,1905. Serial No. 263,573.
T0 at whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLEs W. WALDO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Worcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Garment-Supporter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a garment-supporter for making connection between a garter-strap and the lower edge of a corset.
The especial object of this invention is to provide a simple and eflicient device which can be clam ed onto the lower edge of a cor set, so as to, e firmly fastened thereon without tearing or ripping the corset and which provides a pivotal connection with a garterstrap to allow the required freedom of movement.
A further object of this invention is to provide a construction in which a single clamping-piece serves to fasten the device to the corset and also serves to lock the pivotal joint between the two members of the device.
To these ends this invention consists of the garment-supporter as an article of manufacture and of the combinations of parts therewith, as hereinafter described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims at the end of this specification.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a front view of sufficient parts of a corset to illustrate the application of this invention thereto. Fig. 2 is a front view of the device with its parts separated. Fig. 3 is a side View with the parts in position corresponding to Fig. 2, and Fig. 4 is a rear view of the device, showing the parts locked together.
A garment-supporting device constructed according to this invention comprises an upper member, which is to be attached to a corset, and a lower member, which has provision for receiving a garter-strap.
The upper and lower members are pivotally connected in order to allow a free swinging movement, and the pivotal connection between the two members is preferably secured by means of a pin or stud extending from one member and engaging a keyholesocket in the other member.
The upper member is provided with a single clamping device, which serves to clamp the device to the lower edge of a corset and also serves to lock the pivotal connection be- 'which is the garter-strap clamp 17.
tween the upper and lower members, so that the same cannot become detached.
When the clamp is opened, the device may either be unfastened from the corset or the upper and lower members may be unhitched, as desired.
Referring to the accompanying drawings and in detail, A designates a corset side, only such parts of the same being shown as is necessary to illustrate the application of this invention thereto.
The garment-fastener consists of an upper member 10, which is to be supported from the corset, and a lower member 11, having provision for receiving a garter-strap B.
The upper member 10 is provided with a piece for engaging one side of the corset, which piece is preferably corrugated for strength. The upper member 10 is also provided with side arms 13, pivotally mounted, in which is a clamp-piece 14. Extending down from the up er member 10 is a tongue 15, having a keyhole-slot for receiving the headed pin 18 of the lower member 11. The lower member 11 is provided at opposite sides with flanges 16, pivotally mounted 1iln T e body portion of the upper member 10 is preferably provided with a depression 20 for receiving the end of the clamp-piece 14, as shown in Fig. 2.
Considering now the operation of the complete device, when the clamp 14 is opened, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, the upper and lower members 10 and 11 may be hooked together, the device may be placed in any de sired position on the lower edge of a corset, and when the clamp 14 is closed it will not only fasten the device upon the lower edge of the corset, but the closing of the clamp will also look the pivotal connection between the upper and lower members 10 and 11, so that the parts cannot possibly become unfastened while being worn. On the other hand, whenever it is desired to readjust or remove the device by unfastening the clamp 14 the de vice can be shifted or removed from the corset or the upper and lower members may be detached, permitting the shortening or lengthening of the garter-strap or other desired adjustment.
I am aware that numerous changes may be made in the construction of my garment-supporter by those who are skilled in the art without departing from the scope of my invention as expressed in the claims. I do not ,wish, therefore, to be limited to the particular form or shape of constructions which I have herein shown and described; but
What I do claim, and desire to secureby Letters Patent of the United States, is
member to be attached to a corset, anda lower member having provision for receiving a garter-strap, and a, single 5 clamp, device for fastening the upper member ,to the icorset, andiforalocking the connectionbetween the upper and lower members.
2. As an article of-manufacture, a garmentsupporter comprising an upper member to be attached'to a corset, ajlower member having provision for receiving a garter-strap, .-a pivotal'connection between said members comprising. a headed pin extending ifrom one of said members and engaging alieyholeesocket tin-the other I of said =members, and a single clamp device fonfastening, the upp ermember :to a corset,.and for ilockingithe pivotal connection between said members.
. 3 vAsv an article of manufacture, a, garmentsupporter comprising an upper; member to be attached to. a corset, I a lower member-having ,-prov1s1on-for;rece1v1ng; arg3,I,l'/6I'St1fi p, .a ,piv-
otal connection between said members in theupper member, and a single clamppivoted inarmsof thenupper member,,one part of the clamp engaging the corset, while the 1 other part of-the-clamp covers a portion of thekeyhole-slot so as to lock the pivotal connection between the upper and lower 1. As an article of manufacture, a garment-' supporter comprising two members, an upper members.
4. In a garment-supporter, the combina- :tion ofvan upper member to be attached to a corset, a lower member having side arms with a clamp piece pivoted therein foradclamp-piece pivoted in, arms, extending ,ifrom the upper member, one part ,of the clamppiece engaging and ,clamping ,the device ,to
the corsetfwhilethe other, part of the, clamppiece a covers a portion, of the keyhole-socket --and,ser ves to lock thepivotal co'nnectionbe- 1 tween ,the upper and ,lower members.
In testimony ,whereof .I liavehereunto set myhand in-the presenceof two subscribing Witnesses.
