- Letters latent No. 70,567, dated November 5, 1867.
IMPROVED LAMP-BXTINGUISHEB.
TO ALL ITEMAY CONCERN:
Be it known that we, F. B. HILL, of Cleveland, Quyahoga county, Ohio, and W. H. McCOY, of Des Moincs,
in the county of Polk, and State of Iowa, have invented a new and improved Extinguishing Device for Coal-Oil Lamp-Burners; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, 'reterencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a vertical section of a lamp-burner with our improvement attached to it.
Figure, 2 a plan or top view of thesame, with the cone or deflector removed.
Figure 3, a detached view of the extinguisher.
Siihilar letters of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a new-and improved extinguishing. device for coal-oil lamp-burners, and it consists in the employment or use of a cap constructed in such a manner and of proper dimensions to cover the top of the wick-tube, said cap being attached to a crank on a shaft or rod, which passes through the body of the burner, and all arranged in such a manner that by turning the crank-shaft or rod from the outer side'of the burner, the cap may be adjusted over the top of the wick-tube and the light extinguished, and the cap also moved oil from. the wick-tube when the wick is to be lighted.
A represents a lamp-burner which may be constructed in any of the known forms for burning coal-oil; a being the wick-tube, and b the cone or deflector. These parts being of usual construction, do not require a special description. 13 representsia shaft or rod, which passes horizontally through the body of the burner, and is allowed to turn freely therein, said shaft or rod extending through the side of the burner, and having a knobor button, 0, upon its end for the convenience of turning it, and also having a crank, :1, formed on it, opposite the wick-tube. G represents a cap, which is constructed of such dimensions that it may be fitted over the top of the wick-tube. This cap has two pendent-bars e 0 attached to it, one at each end, and the lower ends of the bars e a are wound or bent loosely around the crank cl of the shaft or rod B, so that the crank may turn within said bars. To the centre of the cap, or about equidistant between the bars a c, a spring or elastic bar,f, is attached, the lower end of which bears agaist a curved wire, g, on the crank. The bars ac, and spring or elastic barf, are secured to one side of the cap, as shown in figs; 1 and 2/ The crank d of the shaft or rod 13 has such a relative position with the wick-tube, that by turning the former the crank 12 will throw the cap C over the wick-tube, as shown in blue in figs. 1 and 2, or remove it therefrom, asindicated in red in fig. 1. The spring or elastic barf, sustains the cap in proper position, and admits of the crank acting properly upon it to effect the desired movement. The device may be applied to a burner at a small cost, and it, besides extinguishing the light, possesses the advantage of preventing an evaporation of the oil within the lamp.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of the cap C, pendent-bars a, rod B, crank (Z, and springf, arranged to operate in the manner nd for the purpose herein specified. i
