FLAME REGULATOR AND EXTINGUISHER FOR LAMPS.

TO .ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

.Be it known that I, WILLIAu I-I. II. I'IINDS, of the town of Groton, iu the county of Middlesex, in the State of Massachusetts, have invented anew and improved Mode of Regulating and Extinguishing Flames for 'giving light; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings,-and to the letters of reference marked thereon..

The nature of my invention consists in attaching two pieces of metal, made to close together around or above the llame, to a cap, to which cap is attached a collar or chimney-holder, when a chimney is used, in such a manner that the said two pieces of metal shall form the vertex or top, or a part of the vertex of top of said cap. Said two pieces of metal to conform to the shape-of the top of said cap. For a fiat wick, the vertex or top of said cap should be convex or rounding. For a wick of any other form, the vortex or top of said cap` should be ilat or nearly so.` The whole to be made of suitable met-al. I

Figure 1 is a side view of a lamp with my i'lame regulator and extinguisher attached. `C C is the cap, to which are attachethn, the two pieces of metal encircling the dame. Said two pieces of metal are attached to the cap C C by meansef two pivots d (l, passing through the two ends of said two pieces of metal, uniting them together and to said cap.; Said two pieces of metal are made to close and open by the opposite end'of each being connected or attached to the collar orchimney-holder bib, which is made to revolve from left to right,

When the top of the cap C C is dat, or-nearly so, the said two pieces of metal are not united, but, attached severally or singly to said' cap, as above described, and made to close and open as above described. [shows a hole in the cap C C vfor the purpose of adjusting the wick without removing said cap, when said flame regulator and extinguisher is used on a lamp without a ratchet. is a platform or bottom' for the cap C C to rest on, and is attached to the tube g, shown in fig. 3, when said flame regulator and extinguisher is used on a lamp. z'z'is ametallic ring attached to tho neck or body of the lamp, and supporting the tubeg containing the wick, as shown in iig. 3,whenthe tube g and metallic ring are screwed together.

Figure 2 is a -trausverse sectional view through the centre of said flame regulator and extinguisher. a is one of the said two pieces of metal; dd the pivots that connectit with the cap C. b is the collar or chimneyholder, showing its connection with the two pieces of metal a. C C is the cap to which the two pieces of metal a encircling the flame are attached by the pivots el d. E and c c are the slide and its support to hold the cap C C in position. By the above device I have a new and improved regulator and extinguisher of flames for giving light, adapted to a fiat or a wick of any other form, giving'more: light from the same amount of burning material, and much less liable to explosion, as it prevents the contents of the lamp from heating.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-J-A I 1. The attaching of two pieces of metal, made to closetogether around or above the llame, to a cap, to which cap is attached a collar or chimney-holder when a chimney is used, in such a manner that the said two pieces of metal shall form the vertex or top, or a part of the vertex or top of said cap, as herein described, and asshown in gs. 1 and 2.

2. The closing and opening of the said two pieces of 'metal by means of a'oollar or chimneyholder, as herein described, and as shown in iigs. 1 and 2. WM. H. H. vHnvns.
