UNlTED STATES JOHN WV. ANGLE, OF SMITHTON, MISSOURI.
ROPE OR WIRE STRETCHER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 681 ,291, dated August 27, 1901.
Application filed February 18, 1901. Serial No. 47.861. (No model,)
To CI/ZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN T. ANGLE, residing at the town of Smithton, in Pettis county, and State of Missouri, have invented an Improvement in Rope r Wire Stretchers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to improvements in rope and wire stretchers and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts; as will be hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side view of my improvement. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof.
Referring to the drawings, the letter A designates the framework of my improvement, made from a single piece of material and bent to form ayoke, the cross-bar B thereof having arms 0 O, the latter, 0, of which is provided with an inclined slot or opening a, formed ,therein.
D designates a winding-drum,having on one end a spindle 0 which is mounted in a bearing formed for the purpose in the arm G. The
opposite end of the drum is provided with a peripheral groove a by means of which the said grooved end is passed into the opening a in the arm 0 and mounted in a hearing at the base of the inclined slot, whereby to journal said drum in the arms of the said frame. By this means the drum is readily removed from or replaced in the arms 0 C. During the rotation of the drum the pawl G, pivoted to the arm 0 and bent outwardly therefrom, engages the teeth of the ratchetwheel F, said ratchet-wheel being mounted on the outer squared end of thedrum. Between the ratchetwheel and the outer face portion of the arm O,I provide a shoulder a formed on the drum, which permits of a space a, whereby the ratchet-wheel is held out of frictional contact with the arm 0 when the drum is rotated.
The central portion of the drum D is provided with a pin E, to which is adapted to be secured one end of a wire or rope, whereby to wind the same on the said drum.
The outer end of the drum D is provided with a crank-arm H, by means of which the drum is rotated. To the outer central portion of the cross-bar B is secured a bolt I, which extends laterally therefrom, its outer end being provided with a screw-threaded portion to receive a nut 12 thereon. This bolt I is adapted to be secured to any convenient object whereby to serve as a fastening during the operation of stretching the wire or rope,
Having described my invention, what I claim is- In an implement of the character described, the combination with a frame, having side arms, one of which is provided with a hearing, a cross-bar integral with said arms, a bolt secured centrally in the cross-bar, the other or opposite arm having an inclined slot or opening therein, of a winding-drum having a spindle at one end, and a peripheral groove at the other end whereby to engage the inclined opening to journal the drum in said arms, a shoulder on said drum, a ratchetwheel mounted on the end of the drum and abutting against said shoulder, a space between said wheel and slotted arm to prevent frictional engagement with said arm, and a pin secured to the central portion of said drum, substantially as specified.
JOHN WV. ANGLE.
