. FASTENING MEANS FOR WAGON-COVERINGS.
Specification of Letters IPatent.
Patented July 6, 1915.
Application filed March 6, 1914. Serial No. 823,038.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN JACKSON, subject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, and resident of 18 St. Clairs street, Crewe, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Means for Wagon-Coverings, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide new or improved fastening or securing means for wagon sheets or coverings which shall obviate the employment of ropes or cords and shall be readily fixed in position and used.
Referring to the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings :-Figures 1 and 2 are respectively front and sectional end elevations showing one convenient arrangement of sheet securing means constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 shows a view of the pivoted catch used in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Figs. 3 and 4 are views similar to Figs. 1 and 2 but showing a modified arrangement of my improved means. Fig. 4 shows a view of the pivoted catch used in the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4.
The same reference letters in the different views indicate the same or similar parts.
I provide a plurality of fastening or securing means upon the sides and ends of each truck, wagon or the like, the said means comprising a base piece at having side brackets 17 thereon to receive the pivot pin 0 of a bell crank lever 03, (ll, one arm d of which is adapted to press the sheet or covering against the wagon side, while the other arm 03 serves as a locking means whereby the fastener is held in its service position. A pin as e inserted through apertures in the side brackets prevents accidental displacement of the arm al A blade or plate spring f may be provided in the base piece a against which the locking end al presses when moving into the locked position, so that when in the locked position a considerable pull must be exerted upon the fastener to release the same. The said spring plate may be a plain fiat plate, as shown, which is so disposed relatively to the fulcrum point of the bell crank lever 03,
d that the locking end thereof is held either in its service or out of service position.
I may, if desired, provide a locking rod for each side of the wagon, truck or the like, the said rod passing through the apertures in the side brackets b of each fastener and holding the bell crank lever cl, d in its locked position. With this arrangement, the adjacent ends of the rods may be secured together at the wagon ends by a lock or other means.
In some cases instead of employing a bell crank lever type of fastener, I may, as shown in Figs. 3 and l, employ an arm (Z mounted upon a pivot pin 0 around which a spring 9 is coiled so as to press the end of the arm against the wagon side, a suitable locking pin 6 or bar being employed to lock the arm in its operative position. A pivoted catch as 6 carried on the end of the pin 0, Fig. 2, may be provided for each device, the said catch entering a slot in the end of the locking pin 6 so as to prevent accidental displacement of the latter.
The end 72, of the fastener which bears against the wagon sheet may be flat or rounded as shown in Figs. 2 and 4: so as to grip the sheet and may be made of wood, metal or other material. The rounded portion forces the adjacent portion of the sheet into a corresponding recess in the wagon side or end.
Having now described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let ters Patent is 1. In securing means for railway wagon sheets, in combination, a base piece having a gap therein, a plate spring in said gap, brackets upon said base piece, a bell crank lever supported by said brackets and having at one end a part for gripping the sheet between itself and the wagon side and at the other end a part for engaging said plate spring, and a locking pin for said bell crank lever extending through said brackets, and adapted to engage the part of said bell crank lever engaging said plate spring to prevent accidental displacement of said bell crank lever, as set forth.
2. Securing means for wagon sheets comprising a pivoted arm having at one end a In testimony whereof I have signed my part for gripping the sheet between itself name to this specification in the presence of and the Wagon, a spring holding said arm two subscribing Witnesses.
