DRESS-SHIELD FASTENER.

SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 681,141, dated August 20, 1901.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, CHARLES A. SEE, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,

3 have invented certain new andnsefnl Improvements in Dress Shield Fasteners, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in fasteners to be used for attaching dress-shields to ladies waists or other garments, and has 1 "for its object to provide a simple and efficient fastener by means of which the shield may t be readily attached to the Waistor other garment or the lining thereof without inconvenience or discomfort to the wearer and which i I may be. quicklyand easily removed.

j C, of the ordinary construction, by means of a to the seam'of which is fastened a dress-shield pair of my improved fasteners D, which are shown in Fig. 1 of thedrawings in about the rectangular portion or head d, which is united by means of a connecting-stem d to a portion 3 g or foot 01 which is bent to form three sides position they will occupy when in use. The fastener is made of one piece of wire, preferably aluminium, and is bent so as to form a of a rectangular figure, as is clearly shown in Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawings. The free end of the wire forming the foot portion d is pointed, as at e, and is slightly deflected inwardly and toward the head or portion d, as is shown in the drawings. By reference to Figs. 3 and 4 of the drawings it will be seen that the foot or portion d is somewhat smaller in outlines than the portion (1 and that the pin or pointed portion e is bent inwardly out of the plane of the portion d so that when the device is in position there will be no danger of the said point pricking the flesh of the wearer.

It will be observed that the wire-forming the fastener is bent to form substantially rectangular corners at each of its bends except at the point of the free end 6 of the wire forming the portion d or foot. By this construction the objection of a spirally-formed wire is overcome, for it is well known that such formed fasteners will unscrew themselves or work out of the pieces which they are intended to hold together, while by my construction the head andfoot portions of the fastener being united bythe stem d, which.

is bent at right angles'to said, portions, will lock the fastener in position and prevent its,

accidental removal.

While I have shown the head and foot por- I tions rectangular in shape and prefer to so make them, yet I may form them of other configurations, but maintain them in parallel planes by means of, the connecting-stem d, united at right angles to said portions, without departing from the spirit of my invention.

The operation is as follows: The point e of the foot portion is inserted into a portion of while the foot portion Will'rest outwardly therefrom in such a manner that the point e will not pierce or prick the flesh of the wearer. It is apparent that by forming the head portion rectangular, as shown and above described, a better purchase or hold thereon may be obtained for turning the fastener than if said portion were made circular.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A dress-shield fastener comprising a wire bent to form a rectangular head portion and a foot portion forming three sides of a rectangular figure, and having its free end' pointed and deflected inwardly and toward the head portion, and a stem uniting the head and foot portions and holding them in paralj lelism, substantially as described.
