PATE
RICHARD G. JOHNSON, OF ROYERSFORD, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHUTTER-BOWER.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 669,929, dated March 12, 1901.
Application filed August 21, 1900. Serial No. 27,573. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, RICHARD G. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Royersford, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Window-Shutter Bowers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to shutter-bowers; and one object of the same is to provide a simple, convenient, and efficient device for the purpose of holding a pair of shutters in a bowed position and which will be a reliable safeguard against the surreptitious opening of the shutters from the outside.
Another object is to provide a shutter-bower which can be produced at a slight cost and which can be applied to any kind of hinged shutters in a very short time and without the use of tools.
I attain these objects by means of the construction which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a View in elevation of a pair of shutters having my improved bower secured thereto, the shutters being shown from the shutter bower detached from the shutter. Fig. 3 is a similar view of a slightly-modified form of my invention;
Referring to said drawings, in which like numerals of reference designate like parts wherever they occur in the different views, the numerals 1 1 designate a pair of shutters of usual construction, and 2 2 are the rings usually secured at a point just below the center of said shutters. These rings are generally pivoted to a screw-eye 3, which secures them to the blind, and when such rings are not on the shutters they are to be furnished and attached as adesirable adjunct to my invention.
My shutter-bower comprises a spring-wire catch 4, having a rounded loop 5, converging spring-arms 6 6, and end stops 7 7*}, bent at right angles to the arms 6. A ring 8 encir cles the two arms 6 6 and is normally prevented from withdrawal by the projecting Fig. 2 is a perspective view of mystops 7 7*. By pressing the spring-arms 6 6 together the ring 8 can be swung over one of the stops 7 or 7, and the catch at may then be connected to'the rings 2 2, attached to the blinds. The blinds are then held in a bowed condition and the ring 2 on shutter 1 lies between the free ends of arms 6 6 at the end of the catch adjacent the ring 8 and prevents the compressing of the arms of the catch sufficiently to permit the ring 8 to be swung over the end stops. The blinds may be closed without removing the ring. When it is desired to open the shutters, one of the rings may be removed from the catch by compressing the spring-arms of the catch and swinging the ring 8 outward.
As a modification of this construction I may bend the end stop 7 around the ring 8, as shown in Fig. 3, and the ring 8 may be formed as an oblong link instead of a round ring.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that my shutter-bower is simple in construction, can be manufactured at a small cost, can be applied to any blind in a short time, and cannot be detached from the outside of the building.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. A shutter-bower consisting of a springwire .catch having an enlarged loop at one end, spring-arms converging from the loop, stops on the ends of said arms, and a ring on the catch back of the stops, substantially as described.
2. A shutter-bower consisting of two rings hinged to the shutters, a spring-wire catch connected to said ring, said catch consisting of a spring-wire loop, converging arms, stops on the ends of said arms, and a ring back of said stops on said arms, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing wit- RICHARD G. JOHNSON.
