BLIND-BUFFER.
Specification of Letters- Patent.
Patented dept. at, 191%;
Application filed February 15, 1915. Serial No. 8,309.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW T. Ho'ror-I- KISS, a citizen of the United States, residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Blind- Bufl'ers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in blind butters, and has for its principal object to provide a blind buffer which will effectively prevent a shutter from rattling and slamming during a blow.
Another object of the invention is to provide a device which will prevent the shutter from banging against the side of the building when the same is opened.
A further object of the invention is to provide a buffer which will eifectively take up the shock of the opening of the shutter and prevent any injury to the building or shutter.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts which will be fully set forth in thefollowing specification and accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 illustrates a horizontal sectional view of a fragment of a building and a portion of a shutter showing this improved blind buffer in place, and
Fig. 2 illustrates a vertical sectional view taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings by characters of reference, the numeral 1 designates a building wall of the usual construction to which the shutter 2 is hingedly secured. The buffer is designated generally by the numeral 3, while the blind holder is designated generally by the numeral 4.
Taking up the detail description of the several elements in the order named, the bufier 3 comprises a fiat strip of metal 5 which is provided with a pair of screw holes for the reception of the screws 6. One end of this metal is bent outwardly as at 7 to form a spring bufl'er against which the blind or shutter strikes when it is swung open. A suitable buffing plate 8 is screwed or otherwise secured as at 9 to the face of the shutter against which the portion 7 of the strip 5 abuts, and this plate is designed to take up wear on the shutter to prevent the same from becoming unsightly at the points of contact.
Proceeding now to the description of the latch member 4E,,the said latch member comprises two separate elements 10 and 11, each of which cooperates with the other in holdingthe shutter against accidental movement. The element comprises a suitable base plate 12 on which is formed the apertured extension 13 which is provided with the end bar 14:, around which the hooked end 15 of the latch 11 extends. This latch member is formed with a central aperture through which the pivot pin 16 extends and is also provided with the thumb piece 17 by which it is released.
It will be apparent from the foregoing that in use when the shutter is opened, the hook member 15 will slide over the bar 16 and thus lock the shutter against movement. Simultaneously the plate 8 will engage the curved portion 7 of the strip 5 and prevent the shutter from hanging against the side of a building. It is also apparent that this curved portion 7 acts as a spring to force the inner portion of the hook member against the bar 14 to hold the two members firmly locked and prevent accidental displacement of the several parts with relation to each other.
It is further apparent that the curved portion of the spring 7 will engage the rear portion of the hooked end 15 of latch element and thus force the same outwardly and into the keeper, thereby preventing the latch from being accidentally released.
While in the foregoing there has been shown and described the preferred embodiment of this invention, it is to be understood that such changes may be made in the combination and arrangement of parts as will fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
The combination with a keeper member projecting horizontally from a wall and provided with an opening, of a latch member pivoted to and carried by a blind said latch member projecting from the blind and having a terminal hook to engage the opening in the keeper member, of a substantially semi-circular spring secured at one end to the said wall and being of a diameter greater than the length of the keeper member so as to project outwardly beyond the same into the path of the blind, said spring being spaced from the keeper member a distance less than the length of the book of the latch member and presenting its convex face to In testimony whereof I afiix my signature and bearing altl ahpoiinthmidway lgetween its in presence of two witnesses.
