WITNESSES UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
PAUL W. BEECH, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO JOHN M. BEECH, OF KNOXVILLE, TENNESSEE.
PAD-CLIP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,7 24, dated January 8, 1901.
Application filed Mav 14,1900. Serial No. 16,640. (No model.)
To all 1072 0777 it may concern.-
Be itknown that I, PAUL W. BEECH, acitizen of the United States, and a resident of Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Pad-Clip, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in clips for holding memorandum, account, let.- ter, or other pads; and the object is to provide a device of this character of simple construction and so arranged that it may be adjusted for holding various sizes of pads firmly and in such manner that the several leaves of the pad maybe torn off or removed when used without interfering with the adjustment of the clip or holder.
I will describe a pad-clip embodying my'invention and then point out the novel features in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a perspective view ofa pad-clip embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a bottom View of a portion of the base, and Fig. 5 is a plan view showing a modification.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a base that maybe made of any suitable material, and attached to the base is a gripping member consistingof a plate 2, having teeth 3 for engaging in the 'pasteboard back a; of a pad. Also secured to the base at right angles to the gripping member 2 is a rail 4, here shown as consisting of a strip of metal bent to a rectangular form in cross-section. One end of this rail is engaged in a socket 5, attached by means of a screw to the base-board 1, and the other end has a plate-section 6, through which a screw passes into the baseboard. Movable on the rail 4 is a grippingsection 7, having teeth 8 for engaging in the back of the pad, and also having fingers 5) for engagingon the upper surface of the back of the pad. This gripping member 7 has a socket portion 10, which extends around the rail 4,
key 11.
and the outer wall of this socket 10 is inclined longitudinally to engage with a wedge-shaped key 11 for clamping the member 7 as adjusted on the rail I.
In operation the back of the pad is to have its upper end engaged with the teeth 3 and then the member 7 may be moved into engagement with said back and clamped by the By this means the pad will be held firmly in place and the several leaves of the pad, when used, may be removed without interfering with the adjustment of the holder.
In Fig. 1 I have shown the fixed member 2 as extended along the upper end of the baseboard 1 and the rail 4 at one side. It is ob vious, however, that the rail may be placed along the upper end of the base or along the side, and instead of a fixed member 2 I may employ two gripping members 12 13, adjustably mounted on a rail 14, as indicated in Fig. 5. These gripping members 12 and 13 are similar in construction to the gripping member 7 and are held as adjusted by Wedgeshaped keys 15 16.
To prevent the device from slipping on a desk or other smooth surface, and also to prevent its scratching or marring the same, I provide the base-board on its under side with cushions 17, of rubber or other suitable material. When two gripping devices, as shown at 12 and 13, are employed, they are designed to be engaged with the sides of the back of,
the pad.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. In a pad-clip, a' movable gripping member consisting of a plate having teeth on one edge for engaging in the back of a pad, and also having fingers for engaging the surface of the back, substantially as specified.
2. A pad-clip, comprisinga base, a gripping member having teeth and attached to the base, a rail attached to the base and extending at right angles to the fixed gripping member, a gripping member mounted to slide on the said rail, and a clamping device for the sliding member, substantially as specified.
33. A pail-clip, comprising a base, a rail attached t-o the-base,a gripping member slidable i In testimony whereof I have signed my on the rail and having apart to engage in the name to this specification in the presence of back of a pad-back and a part to engage the two subscribing witnesses.
surface of the pad-back, a. clamping device PAUL W. BEECH. for said member, and another member for 1 'Witnesses:

stantially as'specified. A. R. DAVANT.
