To (all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, ALFA It. LEIE, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Pans; andI do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawin gs, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

Figure l of the drawings is a representation of a perspective view of one form of my pan. Fig. 2 is a similar view of another form of pan. Fig. 3 is a central vertical longitudinal section of the pan.

The invention relates to dust-pansg and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth.

The object of the invention is to facilitate the use of a dust-pan in relieving the operator of much stooping, in preventing dust from flying, and in other particulars referred to.

In the accompanying drawings the letter A designates the floor of the dust-pan, and B the side walls thereof.

D represents a covering portion which is usually connected to the part B and extends forward over the pan sufficiently far to leave an opening in front, (indicated at e.)

The floor or bottom of the dust pan is formed with a transverse convex curvature or rise g along its front portion, this rise or convex lip terminating in a downwardly and forwardly directed edge portion K, the plane of which is slightly below that of the bottom in order that it shall come into close contact with the carpet or floor when pressure is exerted on said bottom. The floor or bottom of the dust-pan is also formed with an extension h exterior to the wall B, said extension it being on the plane of the bottom or having a slight downward direction, the construction being such that the bottom will have a slight gradual and continuous convexity from its front edge to the rear extremity of its handle extension, so that when pressure is applied to it by the foot it will not only hold the dust pan in position to receive the sweepings, but will have an effect in pressing the forward edge K into contact with the floor or carpet. The back extension, which begins at a point near the greatest rise of said convexity of the bottom, is usually provided with an aperture at m, whereby the dust-pan may be hung upon a suitable nail or pin in the wall when not in use. In this position it will hang nearly fiat against the wall.

Vhen provided with the top D, the dustpan serves to prevent any particles of dust swept therein from flying upward into the air. Sometimes, however, I may make the dust pan without this top or covering portion.

In using the dust=pan the operator is enabled to stand in upright position, leaving both hands free to use the broom, as it is only necessary to place the foot upon the extension of the bottom portion to hold the dust-pan in such position as may be desired, but also to press the front edge down closely to receive the sweepings. In this manner much tire some stooping is avoided in the use of the dust-pan, while its efficiency is believed to be improved.

It will be noted that owing to the practi' cally continuous and gradual arch from the front edge of my pan to the rear extremityof the handle extension of said bottom, and owing to the fact that said extension begins at a point near the greatest height of said arch, foot-pressure may be applied to a point near the greatest rise of the arch of said bot tom and will thus be equally effective both in securing a direct positive and effective downward pressure of the front edge of the pan and in securing the pan against accidental displacement through contact of the broom or otherwise.

A dust-pan, having its bottom formed with a transverse bead at its forward edge, and a handle extension at its rear end portion, said bottom being arched continuously from said bead to the rear extremity of said extension, to better secure the pan against accidental and the rear wall connected to said bottom at displacement, substantially as specified.
