DUST-PAN.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 561 ,917, dated June 9, 1896. Application filed March 1, 1895. Serial No. 540,210. (No model.)

To all whont it nuty concern:

Be it known that I, EDGAR S. ROTHROCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garrettsville, in the county of Portage and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in DustPans and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to dust-pans.

It has for its object to provide a dust-pan which may be firmly held against the floor by the foot, thus leaving both hands free for sweeping and overcoming the objection of the person stooping.

With this object in View the invention consists in certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of my improved dust-pan. Fig. '2 is a vertical sectional View of 'the same, sh owing in dotted lines the position it assumes when pressure is exerted by the foot on the handle.

In the drawings, 1 denotes the pan-bottom, having its front edge 2 turned or bent downward.

3 denotes the side or rim of the pan, which may be of the well-known form.

4: denotes the handle secured to the top edge of the rim and inclined upward and then bent downward to form the vertical portion 5, which is secured to an extension 6 of the pan-bottom. This construction furnishes a strong and rigid handle to receive the foot.

The bottom of the pan is curved or bulged upward from 6 to 7, as shown in Fig; 2, and is provided with a rib 8 near the handle, whereby when pressure is exerted downward on the handle the front edge of the pan will ing the foot to one side while it rests on the handle, the rolls 9 at the end of the extension 6 and the rib 8 allowing the pan to be turned with but little friction.

From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the advantages of the invention will be readily apparent.

The pan is simple in construction and can be manufactured at a small cost, and owing to the fact that it can be held in position by the foot the person is relieved of the strain incident to stooping.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The herein-described dust-pan comprising the pan-bottom inclined downwardly and forwardly across its front end at 2, then downwardly and rearwardly for a short distance, then upwardly and rearwardlyto its rear wall 6, and provided with a rearwardly-extended rib 8 terminating in a downwardly, inwardly and upwardly curved and transversely-disposed integrally-formed roll, the rim 3, and

an upwardly-inclined rearwardly-extended handle 4 bent vertically downward and embracing the roll on the end of the extended rib 8 of the bottom of thedust-pan, as set forth.
