Be it known that I, CHAUNCEY M. VAN EVERY, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Bronson, in the county of Branch and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Adjustable Holder for Stationers Tools, of which the following is a specification.

This invention generically relates to an adjustable holder for stationers tools-such as a paper-knife, envelop-opener, and penholder-and specifically to a projectable envelop-opener and a guide therefor; and the object of the same is to conveniently assemble a number of Stationers implements in a single device and in. such manner that each may be used individually without interference with either of the others.

The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of the several parts, which will be more fully hereinafter described and claimed.

In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a device embodying the features of the invention and showing the paper-cutter partially expelled. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of the improved device, showing the pen-point partially projected. Fig. 3 is a transverse vertical section on the line 3 3, Fig. 1. Similar numerals of reference are employed to indicate corresponding parts in the several views.

The numeral 1 designates a tubular body or barrel having longitudinally-disposed elongated slots 2 and 3 in opposite extremities, and in one end is mounted a cylindrical plug 4, having a paper-knife 5, with a pointed sharp end 6. The knife 5 and plug 4 are freely movable in the body or barrel Without friction, and attached to said plug is a headed stud 7, preferably in the form of a machine-screw, which extends through the adjacent slot 2, and the head of the stud projects beyond or stands outward from the plane of the body. In the opposite extremity of the body or barrel another plug 8 is slidably mounted and is similar in construc- I and dimensions to the plug 4, The plug 8 is provided with any approved means for removably receiving a pen-point 9 and, like the'plug 4, the plug 8 also has a headed stud 10 in all respects similar to the studs 7 appended are drawn to cover the letter open-' ing and cutting attachments.

Oircumferentially rotatable on the body or barrel and in operable relation to the projecting portion of each stud is a sleeve 11, having a slot 12 therethrough slightly larger than the shank of the stud for the free passage of the latter, and at each side of the slot the sleeve is formed with bearing-shoulders 13 for the head of the stud, one shoulder being continued into a cam enlargement 14 to serve as a lock for holding the implement carried by the adjacent plug in opposite extremities of the barrel either in a positive full retracted or expelled position or a par tially-extended position, as will be presently explained.

On the end of the body 01' barrel in which the paper knife or cutter is mounted a head 15 is secured and formed with a beveled working face 16, with a guide rib or flange 17 at one side having a curved bevel edge, a rectangular opening 18 being located in the center of the working face 16 for the movement therethrough of the said paper knife or cutter. The head 15, with its rib or flange 17, in conjunction With the point of the paper knife or cutter, produces the letter-opener. To accomplish this, the paper knife or cut ter is slightly expelled, as shown by Fig. 2, by first loosening the sleeve 11, in engagement with the stud 7, and then firmly lock in g the knife or cutter against slipping move ment by turning the cam enlargement 14 un der the head of said stud. The guide rib or flange 17 is brought to bear against the end of the envelop to be opened with the point of the knife at one side and the curved bevel edge of said rib or flange firmly bearing against the surface on which the letter is rested. The entire implement is then drawn across the end of the envelop, scoring the latter that the inclosure or letter can be removed. The depth of the cut will be regulated to such a degree of nicety as to avoid complete severance of the letter end or scoring of the surface beneath by having the point of the knife or cutter within the plane of said curved bevel edge of the rib or flange 17. The thickness of the envelop caused by a bulky inclosure can also be compensated for by adjusting the knife or cutter. The bevel of the edge of the rib or flange permits the implement to be conveniently canted or arranged at an angle for convenience in performing the operation of letter-opening. The knife or cutter or the pen attachment can also be conveniently and quickly operated by shifting the sleeves for individual complete use or retracted and locked againstincidental expulsion, and both devices will be thereby protected when not in use, and, furthermore, the point of the knife or cutter can be used as an eraser, if desired.

In Fig. 5 a modified construction is shown, and therein a head 19 is formed integrally with the end of the barrel or body 1 and provided with a flange 20 and an inclined face 21, similar to like parts of the head heretofore described.

Though the preferred form is shown and has been described, changes in the minor details may be resorted to without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.

What is claimed is 1. In acombined implement of the character set forth, the combination of a tubular body having a longitudinal slot therein, a sliding plug in said body carrying an implement and provided with a headed stud extending through said slot, and a sleeve circumferentially rotatable on said body and having a slot to receive the stud and also constructed with a cam enlargement to engage the head of the stud.

2. In a combined implement of the charac' ter set forth, the combination of a tubular body having a longitudinal slot therein, a plug slidingly mounted in said body provided with a stationary implement and having a headed stud projecting through the slot, and a sleeve on the body having a circumferential rotation and constructed with a slot through which the stud extends and a cam enlargement at one side to engage the head of the stud.

In a combined implement of the character set forth, the combination with a tubular body, of a knife or cutter, slidingly mounted therein and having a sharp free end, and a guide fixed on the end of the body for bearing against the end of an envelop, and through which the knife or cutter is projectable.

t. In a combined implement of the character set forth, the combination with a tubular body, of a knife or cutter slidable in and project-able from the body, and a guide on the one extremity of the body to coact with the knife or cutter to form an envelop-opener.

5. A device of the character set forth comprising a tubular body having a head on one end with an opening therethrough and also provided with a fixed guide, a pointed device slidingly mounted in the body and movable through the head, and means for securing the pointed device in different projected lengths from the said head.

6. A device of the character set forth comprising a body having an adjustable pointed device therein, and a guiding device coacting with said pointed device to form an en velop-opener having a rib or flange at one side with a bevel edge in operative relation to an adjacent inclined face.
