Description

PATENTED JAN. 7, 1908.
I A. A. Low. CUTTING IMPLEMENT. APPLICATION FILED 1111731071907.
THE NORRIS PETERS co. wnsnmcron. 0. c
ABBOT AUGUSTUS LOW, OF HORSESHOE, NEW YORK.
CUTTING IMPLEMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 7, 1908.
Application filed June l0 1907. Serial No. 378,076.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ABBoT AUGUSTUS Low, a citizen of the United States, residing at Horseshoe, St. Lawrence county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cutting Implements, of which the following is a specification.
My improvements relate to cutting implements designed to be carried upon the person to be used in emergency for severing flower stems, cord and other things relatively small in cross section.
The invention consists in the special construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described and claimed specifically, distinguishing features being the means provided for supplementing thumb pressure with leverage exerted through the fingers of the hand; means for locking the implement in its closed position, means for adjusting the lateral grippers on the cutting blades, and a removable hook upon the end of the stationary blade.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1, is a side elevation of my improved cutting implement, the same being shown as open and ready for use; Fig. 2, is a similar view of the device closed and locked; Fig. 3, is a top view of Fig. 2 Fig. 4, is a front view, and Fig. 5, a transverse section upon plane of line 55Fig. 2.
What may be designated as the stationary blade 11, is formed with a shank, consisting essentially of a handle plate a, to which is secured a corresponding plate I), by means of rivets b,-said plates a and b, constituting the handle of the device. Between these plates a and b, is the space 0, in which is situated the spring (1, attached to the plate a, (as will be seen by reference to Fig. 2), the free end of said spring resting upon the upper side of the shank e, of the movable blade e, which latter is pivotally supported on the plate I), by means of the shank of the screw f, passing through the hole 6 in said plate and screwing into the forward end of the shank e, as shown in Fig. 5. e is a stop or bearing upon the upper side of the shank e, for enagement with the free end (1, of the spring 3 The head f of the screw f, acts to retain and bind the movable member 6, c, to the plate I). r The back of the stationary blade a, is formed with a sleeve or guide a, supporting a bolt g, slidable within said sleeve 0.". The inner end g, of this bolt g, is adapted to fit into a notch or rccessf in the head f of the screw f, when the blade e, and its shank e, are closed against the action of the spring (1 as shown in Fig. 2, thereby locking the parts together. The outer or forward end of the bolt g is formed with a lateral projection or handle 9 to facilitate the manipulation of the bolt.
Lateral gripping jaws e, a are respectively attached to the blades 6 and a, and are preferably formed of sprim metal. These elastic gripping jaws e and a are for the purpose of affording a lateral support to the flower stem or other article to be severed by the cutting edges. They are made adjustable longitudinally upon their respective blades by any suitable mechanical expedient. As shown in the drawing this is accomplished by screws 0*, 0 by which the shanks of the spring jaws are secured in different positions upon the blades by means of female screw holes 6 a provided for the purpose.
h, is a removable end piece secured by a screw h, to the end of the stationary blade (1. When in position it is designed to be used as a hook or means to forward a flower stem or other article into convenient position for manipulation. When the end piece h, is removed the device is capable of use as an ordinary pair of shears; and for a like reason if found desirable the spring grippers a a may be removed.
The rear end 6, of the shank c, is curved outward to form a grip to aid in the manipulation of said movable cutting blade, which is formed with the broad thumb bearing e, at its front end, so that both the thumb and fingers of the hand may be readily available to aid in pressin the cutting edges together to sever an article interposed between them.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,
1. In an implement of the character designated, the combination of the stationary cutting blade formed with a shank handle plate, a corresponding handle plate secured to said shank plate, a movable cuttin blade pivotally secured between said handle plates and formed with a rear extension, and a spring between said handle plates secured thereto at one end and having its free end bearing against the said rear extension of the movable cutting blade, for the purpose described.
2. In an implement of the character desi nated, the combination of a stationary bla e formed with a shank handle plate a corresponding handle plate secured to said shank handle plate a movable cutting blade pivotally secured between said handle plates and formed with a rear extension, a spring between said handle plates secured thereto at one end and having its free end bearing against the said rear extension of the movable cutting blade, and elastic grippers adjustably secured to both cutting blades, for the purpose described. 7
3. In an implement of the character designated, the combination of a stationary blade formed with a shank handle plate, a corresponding handle plate secured to said shank handle plate, a movable cutting blade pivotally secured between said handle plates and formed with a rear extension, a spring between said handle plates secured thereto at one end and having its free end bearing against the said rear extension of the movable cutting blade, and a removable end piece attached to the end of the stationary cutting blade, for the purpose described.
4. In an implement of the character designated, the combination of a stationary blade formed with a shank handle plate, a corresponding handle plate secured to said shank handle plate, a movable cutting blade pivotally secured between said handle plates and ABBOT AUGUSTUS LOW.
